As Manhattan prosecutors continue to consider charging former President Donald Trump with falsifying business records, people in cities around the United States prepared for the potential of anti-Trump demonstrations. Trump angered many by voicing enthusiasm for protests against any looming arrest, which brought to mind the Capitol Hill riots that followed his rhetoric on January 6th, 2021.
Trump and his legal team have denied any wrongdoing related to the hush-money payment his lawyer allegedly made to an adult-film actress in 2016, describing the investigation as politically motivated. In case of an indictment, the grand jury's decision is expected to cause a media frenzy, with the disgraced former president likely to become the first ever to face criminal charges.
Authorities in cities including New York, Atlanta and Palm Beach, Fla., were revisiting their crisis management plans in light of the likelihood of demonstrations. Metal barricades were seen outside the Lower Manhattan
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis broke his silence on the possible indictment of former President Donald J. Trump on Monday, accusing the Manhattan District Attorney of having political motivations. DeSantis’ comments came after two days of increased pressure from Trump’s team and allies, demanding he speak out against the possible indictment.
DeSantis demurred when asked whether he would have a role in extraditing Trump to New York, but he did note the actions over which Trump is likely to be indicted, hush-money payments made in late 2016 by Michael D. Cohen to a porn star.
The governor then attacked the Manhattan District Attorney, saying he was being “weaponized” to “impose a political agenda on society at the expense of the rule of law and public safety.”
Clearly furious at the lack of support from Mr. DeSantis, President Trump
President Joe Biden demonstrated his willingness to confront the new Republican-controlled House as he issued his first veto in office. Secretary of the White House Robyn Patterson made a statement in response to a measure passed by the Congress that "put at risk the retirement savings of individuals across the country." Biden sought to kill the Republican-authored measure, which would have prevented government managers of retirement plans from taking into consideration environmental impacts, social impacts, or other external factors when making investment decision.
The veto also helped to assuage the anger from environmentalists, who were outraged by Biden's recent greenlighting of the Willow oil project in Alaska. Secretary Patterson affirmed the President's stance, saying "The President vetoed the bill because it jeopardizes the hard-earned life savings of cops, firefighters, teachers, and other workers." Republicans argued the policy is "woke," and will hurt retirement investors' bottom line, while Democrats maintained the
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Monday for a two-day visit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The trip has been viewed as an attempt by Xi to demonstrate support for Putin, who is under economic sanctions and facing reports that his military is running out of ammunition for the Ukraine conflict. While Western officials are concerned that Putin could ask Xi to supply weapons to Russia, Beijing has described the trip as one of "friendship and peace." Putin has lost thousands of tanks and personnel carriers in eastern Ukraine and is likely to ask Xi for equipment and ammunition during their meeting.
Former President Donald Trump is seeking to prevent potential prosecution for crimes related to his alleged interference in Georgia’s 2022 presidential election following his loss to President Joe Biden. In court filings, Trump has asked a judge to block the report of a special grand jury in Atlanta and bar any evidence from the panel being used against individuals. He has also sought to disqualify the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, which is currently conducting the criminal investigation, from being involved in the case. The grand jury has been examining Trump’s efforts to get Georgia officials to toss out enough ballots cast for Biden to declare Trump the winner, including his request to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes". A confidential report was submitted to the district attorney that calls for the prosecution of several high-profile individuals. This new court filing is Trump’s first significant challenge to the investigation, which has been underway for over two years.

Amidst a severe food crisis in North Korea, residents of the hermit country are secretly envious of their supreme leader's daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who appears to be well-fed while other children in the country suffer due to the lack of food. Locals told Radio Free Asia's Korean Service that during Kim Jong Un's public appearances, they can't help but notice Kim Ju Ae's "plump cheeks" in comparison to the undernourished kids in their villages.
A source from North Pyongan Province said people were saying that "she must be eating so well, her face is so white and plump like the moon," in contrast to the children who cannot eat properly due to the dearth of food. A different source from South Pyongan Province reported that people were unhappy to see the Beloved Child's chubby appearance featured in propaganda.

K-pop boyband TO1 has announced the cancellation of their appearance at KCON 2023 Thailand due to unforeseen circumstances with their agency, WAKEONE Entertainment. KCON is a major music festival that celebrates Korean pop culture and entertainment. The festival this year is set to feature popular K-pop groups like ATEEZ, ITZY, P1Harmony, and more. TO1's cancellation follows the departure of several members in recent months, leading to concerns among their fanbase about the future of the group.
The NCAA March Madness tournament officially kicked off this Thursday with a blast from the past. At Dockside Brewery in Milford, Connecticut, basketball fans and amateurs alike got to play against two of the University of Connecticut's greatest stars: Scott Burrell and Chris Smith. The event was also a celebration of local advertising agency Haddad and Partners' Sweet Sixteen Anniversary.
Burrell, a Hamden High School graduate, became the first American to be drafted in the first round of two major sports leagues. His legendary court-length pass, during UConn's first Elite Eight appearance, led to Tate George's now-infamous 'the shot'. Later, he was part of the Bulls' sixth NBA championship team.
Smith is Connecticut's all-time leading men's basketball scorer, averaging 16.9 points per game in his career. He was part of the national team that
President Joe Biden has issued his first-ever presidential veto after Congress voted mostly along party lines to block a Labor Department rule that enables retirement plans to consider the long-term impact of social factors and climate change on investments. The rule is related to the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investment strategy. While Democrats support such policies, Republicans regard them as “woke” and a needless burden on retirees. In his veto speech, Biden focused on the potential risk to individual retirement savings, emphasizing that investments that should be taken into account could be impacted by climate change or by overpaying executives. Republican opposition has mounted in conservative states such as Florida, Texas, and West Virginia while advocacy groups backed by conservative donors have launched a campaign claiming ESG investing is just another example of “woke” influence on big business.
As an indictment looms for former President Donald Trump, he recklessly stokes the flames of discord with a call for protests if he is arrested. Trump took to social media to announce that he "will be arrested on Tuesday" for his role in hush money payments to an adult film star before he was elected president in 2016. His comments echo his use of social media to incite a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in Jan. 2021.
Shockingly, his call for protests has been met with support from a legion of Republican officials who have put their loyalty towards Trump ahead of the nation's well-being. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated an indictment of Trump would be an "outrageous abuse of power" and threatened an investigation into whether federal funds were being used for politically-motivated prosecutions. Former Vice President Mike Pence also chimed in, urging the GOP to focus on the
House Republicans are preparing to protect former President Donald Trump as he faces a potential indictment. Following Trump’s announcement of a possible indictment, GOP committee chairs sent a letter to New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg accusing him of an “unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority”. The heads of the Judiciary, House Administration and Oversight committee called on Bragg to provide documents and testimony about his investigation into Trump. While legal experts have doubts about the wisdom of pursuing this case, Republicans have made protecting Trump their primary focus, with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy directing relevant committees to immediately investigate any federal funds used to subvert democracy.
Former President Donald Trump is facing the possibility of criminal charges in the investigation into the 2016 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. On Monday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams stated he was "confident" the city was prepared for any protests that may erupt due to the news.
Writing on his Truth Social platform Saturday, Trump called for supporters to join him in protesting against the supposed pending arrest. However, since the news of a possible indictment surfaced, conservative activist Ali Alexander, who is behind the "Stop the Steal" movement, has publicly said his group will not organize protests due to the matter.
Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to Daniels in the closing days of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has denied the affair and framed the funds as an extortion payment. Recently, speculation has arisen that the former
President Joe Biden has issued his first veto, blocking the repeal of a Labor Department rule that permitted retirement investing tied to environmental and social goals. The Biden administration fought Republican-led efforts to pass the rollback three weeks ago, which was expected. The veto makes good on Biden's frequent promise to veto legislation passed by GOP-controlled House that he disagrees with. The Labor Department rule attempted to undo Trump-era policy that discouraged retirement plan managers from incorporating environmental and social factors into investment decisions. Biden's veto is a win for Democrats who have pushed for policies that encourage major corporations to elevate climate and social goals in their business practices.
Starting Monday, a three-year project to repair Kennedy Expressway will begin, creating major delays for commuters and transforming the look of the expressway. The project, costing $150 million, will repair all 36 bridges between the Edens and Ohio Street as well as add new signage, LED lighting, and patch potholes in the pavement.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will close two inbound lanes of the Kennedy overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, aiming to reduce the amount of traffic on the road. It is expected that the delays will continue throughout the year due to lane shifts and overnight lane closures. IDOT recommends that commuters use public transportation during this time or seek alternative routes to their destination.
John Schumache, IDOT Engineer, commented on the need for the repairs, “Our last major rehabilitation was back in the early 90s. So we're about 30 years on from when
President Joe Biden issued his first veto as Commander-in-Chief Monday in a move to protect Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investment principles. The move came in response to congressional Republicans voting to block a Labor Department rule that allowed for the consideration of long-term environmental, social, and governance factors on investments and pensions.
The legislation had passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate with a simple majority, with two Democrats, Senators Jon Tester of Montana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, voting with Republicans. In response, the president released a statement through Twitter criticizing House Republicans who have argued for disinvestment in fossil fuel companies, saying that "Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene likes it or not," the retirement savings of individuals should be protected.
WhileDemocrats had supported the measure, it has nevertheless become a highly contentious issue. Conservative advocacy groups, backed by
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis broke his silence Monday on former President Donald Trump's expected indictment by a Manhattan grand jury, taking aim at liberal megadonor George Soros and criticizing the district attorney who is pursuing the case. DeSantis accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of “pursuing a political agenda” and called him a “Soros-funded prosecutor.”
The Republican governor declared Monday he had “no interest in getting involved in some manufactured circus” and joked that he wasn’t sure what goes into paying hush money to a porn star. DeSantis, who appears to be a potential 2024 presidential candidate, also poked fun at the situation Trump has found himself in, reiterating the salacious allegations surrounding the case.
The Make America Great Again PAC released a statement Sunday scolding DeSantis for his silence on the matter, but an aide
Lance Reddick, the revered American actor known for his performances in The Wire, John Wick, and Oz, has passed away at 60. His publicist attributed Reddick's death to natural causes. David Simon, creator of The Wire, was among those paying tribute, saying on Twitter, "Could go on, but no, I can't go on. This is gutting. And way, way, way too soon."
In a career spanning three decades, Reddick was noted for his tall, taciturn and elegant portrayals, often in a suit or crisp uniform. Notable roles include Lt. Cedric Daniels from The Wire and Charon from the John Wick film franchise, for which it has been announced both Reeves and Stahelski have dedicated the fourth film to his memory. Beyond the small screen, Reddick had roles in Godzilla vs. Kong, White House Down, and was due to play Zeus in the upcoming
Recent lineup changes for the Chicago Bulls has resulted in Alex Caruso and Patrick Beverley finding themselves on the court at the same time, creating a unique dynamic. Both players are known for their defensive abilities, constantly tracking one another and ready to cover quickly when the other jumps on a mishandled ball or a lackluster pass. This has allowed them to set an immediate defensive pace for the Bulls, with Caruso stating that he likes the smaller lineup as he is able to have an impact right away on the game. The two players both take risks, leaping into passing lanes and poking the ball out of opponents' hands, and they are both good at covering up mistakes. Bulls guard, Caruso, said that the dynamic is even more interesting when he's on the court with Beverley, with both players able to anticipate each other's moves. Beverley returned to Houston on Saturday night, where he scored his highest-scoring game and first double-double since signing with the Bulls, highlighting the positive impact he has had on the team.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a dangerous fungus, Candida auris, which has seen a "dramatic increase" in cases and is spreading rapidly through health care facilities in the US. The CDC has classified the fungal infection as an "urgent threat" because it is becoming resistant to antifungal drugs, is multidrug-resistant, easily spreads through healthcare facilities, and can cause deadly disease. Scientists found 4,041 people who carried the fungus in 2021 but were not sick at the time. The fungus can be found on the skin and throughout the body, and about 30-60% of infected people have died.

This week, Chinese leader Xi Jinping was welcomed in Russia by Vladimir Putin for a state visit, marking their fortieth meeting since Xi came to power in 2012. The meeting comes amid rising tensions in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The two leaders have displayed a strong personal rapport, which has served to strengthen ties between the countries despite hot-button issues such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. After their declaration of a "no limits" partnership last February, Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine, an act that China has maintained neutrality towards by refusing to condemn the invasion and instead supporting Moscow financially by increasing fuel purchases. Traditional allies of Ukraine such as the US have expressed concern over what they believe to be China's one-sided approach to the conflict, further complicating the situation.
Meanwhile, Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of
