President Joe Biden Issues First Veto Over Controversial ESG Rule

President Joe Biden issued his first veto as Commander-in-Chief Monday in a move to protect Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investment principles. The move came in response to congressional Republicans voting to block a Labor Department rule that allowed for the consideration of long-term environmental, social, and governance factors on investments and pensions.

The legislation had passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate with a simple majority, with two Democrats, Senators Jon Tester of Montana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, voting with Republicans. In response, the president released a statement through Twitter criticizing House Republicans who have argued for disinvestment in fossil fuel companies, saying that "Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene likes it or not," the retirement savings of individuals should be protected.
