On February 14th, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred at Michigan State University, leaving three students dead and five wounded. It happened at both the Berkey Hall and the MSU Student Union, two places of education and fellowship, where students were working and socializing. It is believed that the shooter, with no ties to MSU, had chosen the university deliberately to send a message.
The campus rock across the street from MSU College of Education now features painted words that capture the emotion of the moment—“How many more?”. Josh Cowen, a professor of education policy at Michigan State says, “we’re aspirational in these communities. We’re looking for more—if elementary and secondary classrooms are about development, universities are about experience.”

In an effort to contain the attacker, numerous police officers responded to the scene and were able to quickly capture the suspect after they contacted him off-campus. The suspect died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound before they were able to apprehend him.
MSU interim president Teresa Woodruff addressed the tragedy and offered her condolences, saying, “We want to wrap our warm arms around every family that is touched by this tragedy and give them the peace that passeth understanding in moments like this. We will change over time... and we cannot allow this to continue to happen again.”

On the evening of February 14th, 2021, tragedy struck the Michigan State University campus when convicted felon Anthony McRae opened fire in an academic hall, killing three students and critically wounding five others. McRae had been released from probation after being convicted in 2019 of carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
The victims in the MSU shooting have been identified as juniors Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner, and sophomore Brian Fraser, all from the Detroit area. Anderson and Fraser were from Grosse Pointe and Verner was from Clawson.
McRae's brother Michael has said that his brother had become increasingly angry and bitter after his mother's death in September 2020. In a statement to the press, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer described the shooting as a heartbreaking demonstration of the need to end gun violence - suggesting no one should have to endure such a tragedy.

Residents living near Interstate 10 in Tucson, Arizona have been asked to evacuate and the freeway has been closed following a nitric acid spill caused by a commercial tractor-trailer crash.

On Monday evening, a horrific incident unfolded at Michigan State University's campus. Three people were killed, and five were injured, some with life-threatening injuries, in a shooting that occurred in a university academic building and the student union. Children and teens around campus found themselves in shock and terror - the university alerting its students to shelter in place at 8:18PM as police responded to reports of gunfire at two locations. Police identified the gunman as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, who had no known connection to Michigan State University. He was found dead after shooting eight people, three fatally, and then fatally shooting himself during a confrontation with police.
Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, who represents the area, spoke out during the news conference about the string of gun violence, calling the incident "another wake-up call to do something" about gun violence in American schools. Multiple injuries were reported after gunshots were fired at Michigan State University, prompting a campus-wide lockdown Monday evening. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Federal Bureau of Investigation also responded in order to assist the main search for the suspect.
The incident began when shots were heard on the Michigan State campus near Berkey Hall at 8:30 p.m. ET. Police then shifted their attention to IM East, a fitness center located about a mile away.
