On Sunday, Ukrainian military forces reported that over 1,090 Russian troops were killed in what is being considered the deadliest day of fighting since the start of the war in Ukraine more than a year ago. According to a spokesperson from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Shtupun, eight Russian tanks, seven armored fighting vehicles, and four artillery systems were also destroyed in the intensity of the battles around Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast.
Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Maliar further noted that the conflict in Bakhmut has been escalating, with Ukrainian troops defending a supply chain that Russia is trying to control. Satellite images also display a once-thriving city now obliterated and smothered in ashes.
Furthermore, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Podolyak, referred to a strategy adopted by Ukrainian forces that
President Joe Biden announced a landmark agreement with the leaders of Britain and Australia on Monday to develop fleets of nuclear-powered attack submarines. The military deal, which involves the U.S. sharing nuclear technology for such vessels, aims to counter China's growing capabilities and influence in Asia-Pacific region.
Joined by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, President Biden announced the agreement at a naval base in San Diego. According to the agreement, Australia will purchase the submarines from the U.S., followed by Britain, before building its own. This marks the first time the U.S. is sharing nuclear technology for such vessels in 65 years.
The aim of the deal is to increase the strategic presence of the three English-speaking nations in the region and deter China from making military advances. It is part of a broader effort to address China's growing military presence and assert
In an effort to confront the growing military power of China, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom have joined forces to create AUKUS--the trilateral security partnership. As part of this pact, Australia has announced its commitment to purchasing three nuclear submarines from the US, and having the option to purchase two more.
The past 18 months have seen the three nations take strides in developing a unified response to the Chinese challenge--especially with the commitment posed by the nuclear submarines. Not only would these vessels ensure Australia’s security against Chinese forces, but training provided by the US and Britain would help ensure longer-term readiness.
This deal marks an ambitious shift from the three allied nations, and will be long-term and multistage process that will cost billions of dollars. Australia, the UK, and the US have also pledged to work together to develop artificial intelligence capabilities,
A major nor'easter is on its way to the Northeast, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding through Wednesday. The Weather Prediction Center has issued winter alerts for over 20 million people across the region, from New York City to Boston.
Wind gusts could reach up to 50mph along the I-95 corridor, and local snow totals could be as high as 24 to 30 inches in higher elevations. Heavy, wet snow is expected to fall at 2 to 3 inches per hour. Glen Field, warning coordination meteorologist at the weather service office in Boston, noted that "anything more than four inches of heavy wet snow will be enough loading to knock down trees, power lines, and lose power."
Areas around New York City will start feeling the storm's effects later in the day on Monday, with heavy rain and windy conditions. Closer to Boston, the
Just days after being sworn into office, President Biden has stirred up controversy by indicating his support for ConocoPhillips' massive Willow project, an oil drilling plan on Alaska's North Slope. Despite the Biden administration's promises to combat the climate crisis, this proposed project has many environmental advocates calling out their disappointment with the decision.
Sally Gellert of Woodcliff Lake criticized Biden for going "many steps in absolutely the wrong direction", noting how temperatures are already rising at alarming rates, with extreme events such as increased flooding and drought, becoming more and more common. As the world's population scrambles to prepare for the effects of climate change, Gellert takes issue with drilling for oil and gas, a source of fuel which is becoming more and more outdated as renewable sources, such as wind and solar, become more affordable.
Additionally, Carlson also added fuel to the fire with
As winter begins to draw to a close, two powerful storms were anticipated to make landfall on the East and West coasts of the United States. In the Northeast, a nor'easter was predicted to bring heavy rain and snow, with New York Governor Kathy Hochul declaring a state of emergency and urging residents to stock up on supplies as the biggest storm of the winter season rolls in. In California meanwhile, yet another atmospheric river event is on its way, bringing 1-3 inches of rain to low-lying areas and up to eight inches to higher altitude terrain.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning, advising people to prepare for gusts of up to 70 mph that could lead to power outages and road closures. It also warned of flying debris and urged residents to be aware of the danger of outdoor activity and to remain in the lower levels of homes during the storm.

At last week's Winthrop School Committee meeting, good news for the town's financial position gave hope for the upcoming fiscal year. The preliminary state budget and Cherry Sheet figures released by Governor Maura Healey revealed a marked increase in the state's contribution towards the school budget. Town Manager Tony Marino stated that the state aid number was estimated to increase by a whopping $1.8 million, with $1.7 million of it earmarked for educational expenses.
The town is developing a base budget calculation, which assigns a certain percentage of town and school expenses to the budget total. Marino explained that, in most towns, the schools tend to be 60-65% of the operating budget. Sarah Johnson, a financial consultant who worked with Marino in Ipswich, helped develop the base budget calculation. Johnson indicated that the total revenue amount for Fiscal Year '24 is somewhat optimistic, totaling to roughly $59,377
Residents of both the East and West Coasts are bracing for extreme weather as two simultaneous storms are poised to bring a nor'easter from New York to Maine and yet another atmospheric river to California. In the Northeast, one of the region’s biggest storms could bring heavy rain and snow before winter ends next Monday. The Pacific Coast is bracing for an atmospheric river that could add to the dizzying tally of storms this winter which have caused historic flooding and near-record rainfall.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged residents to stock up on supplies and declared a state of emergency. Residents in California are also preparing for the storm, with over 17 million people under flood watches. The storm could exacerbate the flooding and damage in the state, which has already seen hundreds evacuated and two people dead due to storms. This atmospheric river event is expected to bring rainfall totals up to 8 inches across
President Biden has approved a controversial oil drilling project in Alaska's North Slope, despite his claims of being a climate president. ConocoPhillips' Willow Project is projected to start production in six years and will include construction of three pads, hundreds of miles of roads and pipelines, and a large processing facility in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. This move has sparked criticism from environmental activists, who are urging Biden to keep his promises and invest in cleaner climate solutions like wind and solar power.
The decision puts America’s climate pledges at risk and sends a damaging message of dependence on fossil fuels to an international audience. Activists had expected Biden to reject the Willow Project, launching a #StopWillow TikTok campaign in recent weeks to raise awareness. While the administration announced new conservation measures in the Beaufort Sea and ecologically sensitive areas in the NPR-A, the decision fails to address the long-term
After the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank, Congress, President Biden, and banking regulators are pushing for reversing the 2018 law that weakened regulations on certain banks. Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., wants immediate action, saying in a New York Times Editorial that “Congress, the White House and banking regulators should reverse the dangerous bank deregulation of the Trump era.” Representative Katie Porter, D-Calif., is also looking to create legislation that would undo the deregulation rules, saying in an email to supporters that “I have no problem standing up to Wall Street, so I'm writing legislation to reverse that risky law.”
President Biden added his voice to the chorus, saying in a speech that “during the Obama-Biden administration, we put in place tough requirements on banks, like Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, including
Recriminations are flying amidst the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history. As depositors risk the loss of their money, venture capitalists and tech industry leaders are calling for government protection. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has already assured SVB depositors that their money is safe up to $250,000, and they are vowing to pay whatever is necessary to protect all depositors.
While venture capitalists usually oppose government bailouts, they are now pushing to make sure they don't lose their money. Billionaire Mark Cuban has swiftly changed his rhetoric on regulators, and tech industry leaders are insisting that the FDIC should cover all deposits, even those over the usual insurance cap. Larry Summers, the former Clinton Treasury Secretary and Jeffrey Epstein associate, noted that this is not the time for lesson administering or moral hazard lectures, urging the
The Biden Administration took a major step forward in environmental conservation on Sunday as they announced plans to limit or ban oil drilling in 16 million acres of land in Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.
The first part of the plan is to bar drilling in nearly 3 million acres of the Arctic Ocean, closing off federal waters from oil exploration. This will be followed by the development of new rules for more than 13 million acres in the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska . This area encompasses the Teshekpuk Lake, Utukok Uplands, Colville River, Kasegaluk Lagoon and an area known as Peard Bay.
The announcement comes as regulators prepare to announce a final decision on the controversial Willow project pushed by ConocoPhillips. If approved, Willow would be the biggest new oil field in decades in Alaska, producing up to 180,000 barrels a day. The approval of the project would
Former Vice President Mike Pence used his remarks at the Gridiron dinner on Friday to express his strong views about the events of January 6th, 2021. In a stark departure from the usual comedic tone of the dinner, Pence denounced his former boss, President Trump, for the danger he recklessly caused his family and Capitol staff that day.
The current VP called for Trump to be held accountable for his actions, which served to mock decency, and reminded the audience of the risk his words presented that day. These sentiments mirrored those of Pence' published memoir, "So Help Me God," where he attested to the recklessness of the President's words.
With Pence presented with the opportunity, he sought to make the most of addressing a room full of top political journalists and potentially convert those who have been skeptical of him and the 2024 race. Senior adviser, Marc Short, reflected the intent of Pence's speech
After Silicon Valley Bank's (SVB) collapse last week due to high interest rates, the Biden administration is determined to guarantee all deposits at SVB. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen declared that a federal bailout of SVB will not happen while Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young stressed that the US banking system is more resilient thanks to the reforms put in place since the 2008 financial crisis. The bank was ordered to be liquidated and the customers’ insured deposits will be paid Monday.
The collapse of SVB highlights clean tech’s dependence on political factors and the tenuousness of climate financing. SVB had provided financing for almost half of US venture-backed technology and health care companies and had $209 billion in total assets by the end of last year. In order to reduce the severity of the crisis, $42 billion of uninsured deposits were yanked from SVB,
The United Kingdom is taking steps to fortify its security as tensions continue to grow between Russian forces and Ukrainian troops. On Sunday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the UK was upping its defense spending by $6 billion to "fortify" against threats from Russia and China. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces said late Sunday that Russian forces had suffered 1,090 fatalities in the war with Ukraine, which could be the deadliest day of the conflict since it began over a year ago.
The UK's increased defense spending will be used to purchase new ammunition, modernize the UK's nuclear submarine program and finance the 'next phase' of AUKUS: a security pact between the UK, US and Australia. The pact's details will be unveiled Monday by UK, US and Australian leaders at a joint news conference.
British leaders have identified both Russia and China as hostile
Residents of New York City can expect to see a last-gasp winter storm this week with robust wind gusts and heavy rain followed by some snow. According to FOX Meteorologist Cody Braud, the nor'easter will bring wet ground and warmer temperatures which mean that the snow will have to overcome the rain and the warmth in order to accumulate. Braud predicts that the Big Apple could see up to one inch of snow.
Suburbanites north of Manhattan are more likely to see snow accumulate due to the higher elevations which could collect more snow. The National Weather Service forecasts areas of higher elevation could produce snowfall of up to a foot but warmer temperatures near I-95 corridors may cause snowfall amounts to decrease. Further inland from the coasts, beginning in Minnesota and Wisconsin, there is the potential for extreme amounts of snow and blizzard conditions.

Under the Biden administration, expectations were high for climate action and promises of combatting the climate crisis. Unfortunately, President Joe Biden’s indications of support for ConocoPhillips’ Willow Project, an energy drilling plan on Alaska’s North Slope, threatens to set back the climate plans of the current administration. Supporters of the project argue that drilling for more oil and gas is essential, while others insist this will lead to increased climate impacts such as wildfires, hurricanes, drought and floods.
In response, the #StopWillow movement took over Tik Tok in an effort to campaign against the Willow Project. However, the Biden administration claims to be legally constrained and unable to fully reject the project. They did manage to reduce the drill-pads to two, allowing ConocoPhillips to drill around 70% of the oil they were originally seeking, and are set to announce
On Saturday, Ukraine's military reported that Russian forces lost 1,090 troops in fighting for control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in what may be the greatest single-day death toll since the war began over a year ago. In addition, Ukrainian forces eliminated eight tanks, seven armored fighting vehicles, and four artillery systems in the engagement. Ukrainian military spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatyi further reported that an additional 239 Russian soldiers were killed in fighting near Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Maliar attested to the "aggravated" battle and offered that Ukraine’s forces were attempting to prevent the enemy from achieving their goals. However, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War, the Moscow-allied Wagner Group fighters were likely pinned in urban areas, which hindered their offensive capabilities.

At midnight on Friday, the Pajaro River levee in California breached under the pressure of yet another powerful California storm. The 40 foot wide breach immediately prompted the evacuation of 8,500 California residents, including roughly 1,700 from the unincorporated community of Pajaro.
“My heart hurts tonight for the residents of Pajaro. We were hoping to avoid and prevent this situation, but the worst case scenario has arrived with the Pajaro River overtopping and levee breaching at about midnight,” said Luis Alejo, the chair of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors.
The breach is only the latest development in an unrelenting stream of California storms originating from near Hawaii which are expected to last through the coming week, dumping upwards of 15 inches of rain and 4-8 feet of snow in the highest elevations
In an unprecedented move on Saturday night, former Vice President Mike Pence spoke out against Donald Trump, directly blaming the former president for his role in the lead-up to the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol.
The remarks came during his appearance at the white-tie Gridiron dinner, organised by the press corp in Washington that this year featured speeches from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy in addition to Pence.
Pence said that Trump was wrong for trying to overturn the election and that his reckless words put everyone at the Capitol in danger. “Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace, and it mocks decency to portray it in any other way”, the former vice president stated.
He also sent a message to those trying to rewrite the events of that day, saying, “The American people have a right to

Russian forces in Ukraine suffered massive losses over weekend with Kyiv's military claiming more than 1,090 casualties - making it the deadliest day of fighting since Russia's invasion over a year prior. Ukrainian troops were also successful in eliminating 8 tanks, 7 armored vehicles, and 4 artillery systems. In addition, another 239 Russian soldiers were reported killed at the frontline of Bakhmut in the Donetsk Oblast.
As the ongoing battle of Bakhmut continues, Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense, Hanna Maliar, said the current situation is "aggravated" and Russian forces are pushing forward despite their losses. Satellite images show once-thriving city reduced to rubble and an ash cloud caused by relentless attacks from both sides. Ukrainian forces are reportedly holed up in buildings on the west side of the Bakhmutka River in the 2,600-foot area of open space now being referred to as "the

The fighting for control of the salt-mining town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine has resulted in devastating losses for both Ukraine and Russian forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 1,100 Russian soldiers were killed and an additional 1,500 were so badly wounded they are unable to continue fighting in the span of a week. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, their forces destroyed more than 220 Ukrainian service members in the past day alone.
Furthermore, their forces have begun military operations in the Donetsk region bordering Luhansk. With the Bakhmutka River winding through Bakhmut now marking the front line, Ukraine controls the area to the west and the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary group, controls the eastern part according to British intelligence.
The fight over the area has continued for months, with both sides admiting massive losses
