Turkish citizens awoke to a 7.8 magnitude quake early Monday morning that shook the entire country and claimed the lives of over 500 people. While the devastation to civilians was catastrophic, the nation's oil pipelines have stayed largely intact despite the force of the quake. Oil flows from the Kerkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, carrying oil from Iraq to Turkey, and from the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline are continuing as normal.
The Ceyhan oil terminal in southern Turkey was initially suspended following the quake, however a spokesperson from Tribeca shipping agency announced that an emergency meeting had been convened to address the issue. The terminal is located around 155 kilometers from the quake’s epicenter and does not appear to have experienced significant damage.
State pipeline operator BOTAS reported that damage to a natural gas transmission line had led to isolated disruption of supplies to the provinces of Gaziantep
U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Commander Gen. Glen VanHerck recently revealed a major gap in U.S. defenses – since 2019, multiple Chinese airships, including surveillance balloons, have incursioned into the U.S. with no detection. This startling admission has raised questions on just how they managed to fly under the radar.
The United States Air Force Assessment from February 2nd indicates that China launched the spy balloon in question and has operated multiple High Altitude Balloons (HABs) for months at a time as well. It was only when the Biden Administration proposed increased vigilance of overseas surveillance was the balloon detected.
According to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, “the intelligence community made this a priority at the direction of the President,” and “we enhanced our surveillance of our territorial airspace, enhanced our capacity to be able to detect

Gradey Dick had 21, Kevin McCullar 16 (10-of-13 from the line) and Joseph Yesufu 14 off the bench. To make up for the below-average night from leading scorer Jalen Wilson, KJ Adams had 10 points.
On Monday, a devastating earthquake shook the town of Darkush in Syria's Idlib province. The al-Rahma hospital there braced for the influx of victims in need of urgent medical aid. Now, in a turn of events, a request for help from Israel has been brought to the table.
Russia, with a large military presence in the country, has asked Israel to provide aid to the earthquake victims. No further details were given in the unsourced report, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the telephonic request, stating that Israel would provide assistance despite the fact that Syria is considered a hostile state and the two countries do not have diplomatic ties.
Israel has successfully gone beyond the ingrained political divide during Syria’s civil war. In the past, Israel has set up mechanisms to provide medical treatment to Syrian civilians on the border.
The aid rendered by Israel will come with no strings attached and truly
Residents of the small town of InsertName were recently dealt a harsh blow when their power suddenly went out due to a system-wide electric outage on Wednesday. The power outage lasted for four hours, ending at around 9PM.
The outage occurred due to an overload of electric usage throughout the town. While exact details remain unclear, it has been discovered that certain areas, mainly those with poorer infrastructure, were affected more severely than others. Many people were left in the dark with no power to their homes and businesses.
Town officials moved quickly to restore the power and provide assistance to affected residents. City electricians spent the entire night assessing the problem and fixing the issues as quickly as possible. By the morning, all homes and businesses had their power restored.

The Chinese surveillance balloon incident has brought to light the growing tensions between the United States and China in recent months. After soaring for days over an area that included nuclear silos in Montana and eventually landing in shallow waters near South Carolina, the balloon has become a subject of great intrigue for both military and intelligence officials. As a result, security agencies are now attempting to reverse-engineer whatever remains of the balloon in an attempt to discover its implications.
The incident underscores the lack of communication between Washington and Beijing, with both choosing to overlook the common threats such surveillance balloons could cause. Evan Medeiros, a professor who advised President Barack Obama on China and Asia-related issues, stated that while the precise intelligence yield of the balloon remains unknown, the violation of sovereignty is certainly apparent. In fact, the US-China relationship has always been a rocky one, with China objecting vehemently every time the US has flown its
Residents of the United States have been surprised to learn that Chinese spy balloons flew over the US undetected by the military during the Trump administration. The new revelation was made Monday by Gen. Glen VanHerck, head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), who confirmed the US military missed at least three of the balloon incursions.
VanHerck cited a “domain awareness gap” as the reason why the previous flights were not mentioned to senior Trump officials at the time. Later, the intelligence community determined the flights occurred using “additional means of collection.” Questions are now being asked about why the military did not shoot down the latest balloon off the coast of South Carolina before it started its mission.
VanHerck answered that the balloon in question “did not present a physical military threat to North America” and so lacked any “hostile act or
Fresh Ideation Food Group LLC has issued a recall of more than 400 products, including ready-to-eat sandwiches, wraps, fruit, yogurt, desserts and salads, sold in nine states and the District of Columbia. The contamination is due to elevated levels of listeria, an organism which can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term, mild symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recall, announced on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website Friday is for products sold from the 24th of January to the 30th of January from retail locations, vending machines, and during travel with transportation providers. A full list of recalled brands and identifiers has
A photographer based on Cape Cod captured a chilling image of a shark, frozen stiff, on Cold Storage Beach over the weekend, illustrating just how cold it was in the Northeast due to the polar vortex. On Saturday morning, temperatures dropped to a bitter -10 in Boston and -32 with wind chill.
Amie Medeiros, from Yarmouth Port, discovered the frozen shark when she ventured out to Cold Storage Beach in Dennis on Saturday afternoon. Upon finding the predator, completely frozen on the shore, she was filled with shock and awe. The shark was fully intact with gashes near its right fin and pieces missing from its tail, pectoral fin and teeth, likely caused by scavengers.
John Chisholm, a marine biologist and adjunct scientist at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, identified the creature as a male porbeagle shark. He noted that the shark must have died
Amidst the rising refugee crisis in Turkey, the Turkish Occupation State deported more than 10,000 refugees and refused entry to another 20,000 in the first month of 2023 alone. Many of these deportations were done against the will of the refugees, with reports of physical and psychological pressure, torture and infiltration of propaganda.
The Turkish authorities have reportedly been targeting and arresting Syrian men, boys and journalists from public places, such as their homes and workplaces. Those arrested were beaten and abused, forced to sign voluntary return forms, taken to border crossing points and threatened with weapons. Furthermore, the organization Reporters Without Borders has raised serious concern for two Syrian journalists held in refugee camps in Turkey who are at risk of being sent back to Syria.
Human rights organizations report that Turkey’s actions are not just hostile, but also lead to demographic changes as most of the refugees being deported come from Syria

On Monday, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit southeastern Turkey, leaving more than 1,000 dead and thousands injured. This followed a magnitude 7.8 earthquake earlier in the day which killed at least 1,014 people and destroyed over 2,800 buildings in Turkey, and over 370 in Syria. With the area still in turmoil from the yearslong Syrian Civil War, nations from all over the world have offered up their assistance.
The earthquake impacted an area extending beyond the Syrian and Turkish borders, being felt as far away as Cairo, Cyprus, Lebanon, Greenland, Denmark and Bornholm Island. The energy sent shockwaves through the region, registering on the seismic devices in both countries. In Denmark, seismologist Tine Larsen of the Geological Survey reported that the seismic waves reached the seismograph in Bornholm five minutes after the shaking started, with the east coast of Greenland getting affected after eight

The movement of Chinese spy balloons over the continental US, which was previously unknown, was only discovered after President Joe Biden took office, according to a senior administration official. Though how and when the balloons were found is still not yet known, the Biden administration believes Chinese surveillance programs have been deployed in five continents over the last several years.
The Pentagon had briefed Congress on balloons that flew near Texas and Florida during the Trump administration, and former President Donald Trump said on social media that these reports were “fake disinformation.” However, the senior administration official now states that the balloons had not been discovered till the Trump administration left office.
Another Chinese spy balloon also transited the US briefly at the beginning of the Biden administration, which was successfully shot down by the US military on Saturday. This balloon was unique in both its path—down from Alaska and Canada into the US—and the length of time it loite
Legendary hip-hop executive J. Prince recently made some bold accusations about rap-star Offset during an interview with the Million Dollarz Worth of Game podcast hosted by Gillie Da Kid and Wallo. J. Prince alleged that Offset "throws rocks" and hides his hands and even threatened him by saying, "Don't ever put me in no position where I have to defend myself, that wouldn't be healthy for you."
In response, Offset called out Gillie and Wallo for instigating the feud and continued to blast the podcasts' hosts for stirring up the drama. Offset accused Gillie & Wallo of providing a platform to J. Prince to gain attention while exploiting Takeoff's death.
At the end of the interview, J. Prince dismissed the rumor that he requires hip-hop artists to check in with him whenever they visit Houston, saying
On Sunday, the death of former Pakistan Army Chief and President General Pervez Musharraf was confirmed by Pakistan’s consulate in Dubai and embassy in Abu Dhabi. The 79-year-old suffered from a rare disease, amyloidosis, for the last several years and passed away in a hospital in Dubai on Sunday morning.
Since the news of his sudden demise, condolences have been pouring in from across the country as well as from abroad. Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad and all the services chiefs expressed their heartfelt condolences while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared Musharraf a “great person” and extended his sympathies to the grieving family.
Musharraf assumed power in 1999 after ousting the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif via military coup and was elected president the following year. But his tenure was marked by two failed
From the outside, the "Triangle House" located in Buffalo, NY may appear to be a space-aged structure or even a chapel. But it's anything but. Ben Perrone, the house's 90-year-old creator and owner says, "when you're creative, things happen."
This one-of-a-kind, 2000 square foot building has one bedroom, three bathrooms and plenty of daylight, despite the few windows that can be seen from the exterior. When asked about the design, architect Kevin Conners of eco_logic Studio said, "I've also always had this idea about divergence and convergence - so that was fun to play with here."
Unsurprisingly, Ben expresses that the house has been recently met with positive feedback, with neighbors often commenting positively on the design.
As Ben celebrates his 90th birthday this October,
The countdown is on in the Sean Payton sweepstakes. After being strongly linked with Denver, Indianapolis, Arizona, and Houston during the most recent coaching searches, Payton has yet to commit to any of the teams, but reports suggest the Broncos are frontrunners for his services for 2023.
Payton has been open about his love of broadcasting, however, he hasn't taken his name out of the running for the 2023 NFL campaign. He has been interviewed by all four teams, and rumors suggest the Panthers have extended an offer.
The Broncos have interviewed eight candidates for the job, with Payton being the most intriguing among them. Last week, Payton had a meeting in Los Angeles
On Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 shook Turkey and Syria, leaving a staggering death toll and little to no time for the countries to prepare. This event is considered one of the most severe earthquakes in recent years due to the number of quakes of a similar magnitude in the past decade amounting to less than twenty. In comparison to the 6.2 earthquake that struck Central Italy in 2016 and killed some 300 people, Monday's event released 250 times as much energy.
The cause of the earthquake can be attributed to the East Anatolian Fault, a strike-slip fault where two rock plates are pushing up against each other across a vertical fault line. The initial rupture of this quake began at a relatively shallow depth, making the shaking more intense at ground level.
Realizing the severity of the situation, aftershocks began happening almost immediately afterwards, with an initial 6.7-magnitude coming
On Monday morning, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria, leaving over 10 people dead and many more injured or trapped beneath the rubble. The earthquake, likely triggered by the East Anatolian Fault, was quickly followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock, with more aftershocks occurring later in the day. Reports from Turkey's disaster agency show that multiple buildings were destroyed and numerous casualties are expected.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a statement on Twitter, saying,"search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched" and that the priority was to retrieve those trapped and injured. In addition, Syria's interior ministry reported that "entire buildings have collapsed" in the quake, with people being trapped underneath rubble. Syrian Civil Defense urged people to evacuate their buildings and gather in open areas.
Residents in Lebanon also felt the quake, which shook buildings for about 40 seconds.

The Northeast was hit with an extreme cold snap on Friday, breaking records in its wake. Temperatures dipped to a remarkable -46 F on Mount Washington, New Hampshire, with winds at a powerful 97 mph. This created a wind chill of -108F, possibly the lowest ever recorded in the United States. Meteorologists believe that the dangerous chill extended back to 1885 when the records first began to be kept. Low levels swept Boston, Massachusetts (-8 F), Providence, Rhode Island ( -4 F) and Bridgeport, Connecticut (2 F) as well, setting their own records.
Further North, in Maine and Acadia National Park, the winds felt like -62 F and -31 F to -61 F respectively. To compound the danger, an ice storm spread throughout Arkansas and Texas, including power outages and killed at least 8 people.
