Sudanese unrest reached new heights as the country saw deadly fighting amid clashes that rocked the capital Khartoum. Amid the violence, a passenger plane heading for Saudi Arabia came under fire, according to Saudia, the kingdom's flag carrier. The airline said that its Airbus A330 was damaged by gunfire while guests and crew members were on board ahead of its scheduled departure to Riyadh. The statement did not mention any casualties. However, it has been confirmed that all members of the aircraft's cabin crew have safely arrived at the Saudi embassy in Sudan, and all other flights to and from the country have been suspended. Clashes broke out on 15 April between Sudan's army and paramilitaries, and the doctors' union reported three civilian deaths, including at Khartoum's airport in the city centre. With the escalation of violence, world powers have condemned the fighting and called for calm. The US Ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey urged all senior military leaders to stop the fighting, while the UAE urged all parties in Sudan to exercise restraint and work towards ending the crisis through dialogue.

Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guard employee, was arrested by the FBI on charges of leaking highly sensitive Pentagon documents online. The alleged motive behind the leak appears to have been that he wanted to show off to and impress his friends and establish himself as an important figure in a small community of digital gamers. This differs from other cases of young people who compromised national security for noble reasons or in protest. Teixeira’s actions allegedly resulted from brainless bragging and narcissism, despite the damage he may have caused. While Teixeira has yet to be officially charged, he faces investigation and possible prosecution for the unauthorized removal and transmission of classified national defence information. The leaked documents referred to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and details of America's relationship with many of its allies around the world, including the UK, South Korea, Egypt, Israel, and the UAE. Despite discrepancies over exactly how many documents were leaked, there appears to be consensus that the damage caused is immense.

A Canadian Pacific Kansas City freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Rockwood, Maine on Saturday, causing a fire that involved three locomotives and rail cars carrying lumber and wires. However, officials assured that there is no threat to public health or safety from the derailment, and that the hazardous materials did not catch fire or leak. The derailment happened due to a track washout after heavy rain, which washes away the ballast and roadway under the track. Three locomotive engines and six rail cars carrying lumber and wiring went off the track, sparking a small forest fire in the area. Officials disclosed that the fires were contained and being monitored, while the materials transported in additional rail cars were not at risk of leakage or catching fire. Three railroad employees were injured, but the injuries were non-life-threatening. No evacuations were necessary. Canadian Pacific Kansas City is coordinating with local first responders and conducting a full assessment of the situation, while early indications suggest that the derailment may have been caused by ice build-up and debris washing out part of the railroad track.

A photo of Bill Iffrig lying on the ground after being knocked down by the first bomb during the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 went viral around the world. It was later used as the front cover of Sports Illustrated, becoming an iconic image of the tragedy. Photographer John Tlumacki was stunned when, 10 years later, Iffrig's son invited him to visit his father in Washington state, where he now lives in a care home with his wife, who is also suffering from dementia. As soon as the door to the couple's room was opened, revealing Iffrig sitting in a wheelchair by a table displaying a framed image of himself on the ground, Tlumacki knew he was looking at someone he knew well. The pair chatted and were photographed together for the first time since the Boston Marathon bombing. The Boston Red Sox has announced a tribute to the victims of the bombing at Fenway Park, where the 2013 team will also be honored.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently visited Beijing and issued stern warnings about China's rising power, citing the arrests of two human rights activists during her stay, while simultaneously rejecting China's claim on Taiwan. This departure from former Chancellor Angela Merkel's policy precedes the development of a new Chinese strategy by Germany's new leader, Olaf Scholz, seeking to decrease dependence on China as an export market. In light of Merkel's economic-friendly relationship with China, Scholz's new stance suggests a large shift in Germany's traditional position. Meanwhile, France's Emmanuel Macron has visited China and reportedly entered into deals with Chinese officials, further complicating the situation. With two of the most influential nations in Europe taking starkly different approaches on China, the future of Europe-China relations remain uncertain.

Fox News has apologized to the judge overseeing Dominion's defamation lawsuit and said it was committed to fully communicating with the court. The apology came after Judge Eric Davis sanctioned Fox News over delayed evidence disclosure and misrepresentations made to the court regarding Rupert Murdoch's role at the network. Dominion's lawyers accused Fox of hiding the fact that Murdoch was an officer at Fox News, which was only revealed days before trial, preventing Dominion from obtaining more evidence regarding him. Fox attributed the issue to a "misunderstanding" and denied any intent to mislead the court. Judge Davis has said he is likely to appoint a special master to investigate whether Fox's representations to the court were "untrue or negligent." The defamation case has arisen from on-air statements made by Fox asserting that Dominion's voting machines led to Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 election. The trial's remaining task is to determine whether Fox made these false statements with actual malice.

Many reproductive rights activists had never heard of the Comstock Act until Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk used it as part of his reasoning to seek a ban on a key abortion medication. This obscure law, passed in 1873, was meant to prohibit the sending of "obscene, lewd, and/or lascivious" materials through the U.S. mail, but it was also interpreted to include banning the mailing of medical tools and information related to abortions and contraception. The law has been criticized as unconstitutional and outdated, but its language and intent have been resurrected by conservative judges to justify anti-abortion rulings. The Comstock Act has not been broadly enforced since the early 20th century, but it still appears in some state criminal statutes. The National Abortion Federation has reported that anti-abortion activists have used Comstock laws to target abortion providers in Indiana and Illinois. As with previous legal challenges to Roe v. Wade, advocates fear that small, seemingly insignificant laws will be used to slowly erode access to abortion, particularly medication abortion, which now accounts for more than half of all U.S. abortions.

Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association (NRA), criticized "woke" district attorneys who fail to prosecute violent criminals, and the media who allegedly glorify mass shooters, during the organization's annual convention in Indianapolis. LaPierre offered no solutions to gun violence, blaming Soros-funded district attorneys for increasing violent crime rates in cities like Austin and Chicago. He defended the Second Amendment and gun rights, after mass shootings in Nashville and Louisville. The NRA's political power remains strong, as Republican hopefuls for the 2024 presidential race vowed to protect the Second Amendment at all costs, opposing firearm restrictions despite recent mass shootings. LaPierre's speech did not mention the ongoing class-action lawsuit against the organization or the 2018 Russian agent who pled guilty to infiltrating the NRA, and the group still faces political and financial challenges. While the NRA continues to defend gun ownership as a basic freedom, critics say it distracts from addressing the root causes of gun violence.

The recent leak of Pentagon documents by National Guard Airman Jack Teixeira has brought about a heated debate on whether he should be considered a hero or a criminal. The documents revealed extensive American spying on American allies as well as important revelations about the war in Ukraine. While authorities have arrested Teixeira, 21, and his motives remain unclear, many believe that he was performing a public service by making the information public. Citizens in a democracy should be able to make informed decisions about their country's foreign policy, especially in the context of a potentially catastrophic conflict between the United States and Russia. While some argue that the lives of intelligence sources will be put in danger by the leak, others believe that the principle of transparency and accountability outweighs those concerns. The debate raises the question of whether or not the government is too secretive, and whether whistleblowers like Teixeira should be protected or punished.

On Saturday morning, a fire broke out at the Pinova plant in Brunswick, Georgia, prompting an evacuation order. Glynn County Fire Rescue and Brunswick Fire Department have been fighting the fire since 7 a.m. and contained it for a time, but it reignited at 3 p.m., leading authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for those near the plant within half a mile. There have been no injuries reported so far; the cause of the fire remains unknown. The plant is owned by Pinova, a subsidiary of DRT Worldwide, and is located about 80 miles south of Savannah. The Brunswick fire is the second fire in a plastic resin plant in a week, following the Richmond fire in Indiana. Glynn County resorted to employing fire retardant drops to quell the blaze, which continued to burn on Saturday evening. The shelter-in-place order and the evacuation order have both been lifted since damage was limited to a few structures, and chemical tanks remained unscathed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

While footage of Joe Biden arriving in Northern Ireland last week went viral, it turns out that the misleading portion of the video which has been shared around the world is just a snippet. In the edited clip, Biden slightly shoves the waiting British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to the side and goes on to salute a representative of King Charles III and hug the American ambassador to the United Kingdom. However, the full recording shows that Biden actually spoke with Sunak briefly and shook his hand before greeting the other dignitaries. Despite this, some Twitter users, including a few journalists, shared the edited video and concluded that Biden had failed to recognise Sunak on the tarmac at Belfast International Airport. While Sunak did appear to look more thrilled than Biden, nothing more could be gleaned from the footage without knowing what the two men said to each other. Ultimately, the edited video led some to cry racism, outrage that the Democrat Biden had snubbed the Brown-skinned Sunak.

Gunfire and clashes have erupted in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF stated they have taken control of the presidential palace, Khartoum International airport and Merowe airport, whereas the army denied the claims and said the fighting started after RSF troops tried to attack. Tensions between the military and the RSF emerged from a proposed transition to civilian rule that foundered over the timetable to integrate the RSF into the national army. The RSF wanted a delay of ten years, while the army stated it should occur within two years. After days of tensions, the situation looked like it would have been resolved when the army chief offered to speak to the RSF commander. However, that changed on Saturday with the sudden eruption of fighting. The United States' embassy is sheltering in place with its staff as they hear gunfire and fighting. The situation raises concerns of the first civil war in a decade, which would create significant geopolitical instability in the region.

A Canadian Pacific Kansas City freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed and caught fire near the village of Rockwood in Maine, causing minor injuries to three rail employees. Three locomotive engines and six rail cars carrying lumber and electrical wiring derailed and started small forest fires in a wooded area after the train encountered a track washout. Despite the other rail cars transporting hazardous materials remaining intact, none caught fire or leaked, and they were deemed to be safe. The nature of the hazardous materials being transported have not been disclosed by Canadian Pacific, and it remains unknown where the train was headed to or traveling from. This incident comes amid calls from regulators and Congress for railroad companies to prevent derailments following previous fiery disasters involving hazardous chemicals in Ohio and Minnesota.

As the National Rifle Association’s annual convention kicked off in Indianapolis, top Republican hopefuls for the 2024 presidential race pledged to protect the Second Amendment, even as mass shootings ravage the country. The event was held just days after mass shootings in Nashville and Louisville, demonstrating that these tragic events have become a fabric of American life that the NRA cannot avoid. NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre believes his group could play a crucial role in the 2024 election. However, both he and other speakers at the event made no mention of solutions to stop gun violence. Former Vice President Mike Pence called for federal funding for armed school officers and more institutions for the mentally ill, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he had resisted implementing any gun restrictions in his state despite opposition. Former President Donald Trump used the event to declare himself the "most pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment president," and as his first speech since being indicted on 34 felony charges in New York relating to a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, it’s clear that he's using this speech to bolster his bid as the GOP nominee for president in 2024.

Tech executive and Cash App founder, Bob Lee, was killed in San Francisco on April 4th, which triggered a heated public debate regarding public safety and policy in the city. Elon Musk, alongside several other Silicon Valley executives, claimed that San Francisco's uncontrolled homelessness and violence may have caused Lee's death. However, the tensions became heightened after police charged another tech entrepreneur with murder, causing several residents to accuse the industry leaders of exploiting the tragedy as a political agenda. Several residents, including insiders from the tech sector, claimed that the incident revealed the fissures in San Francisco’s tech industry and its relationship with the city. Lee was a respected tech executive, was widely known in the industry, and the father of two teenage daughters.

The suspect in Lee’s killing is tech entrepreneur Nima Momeni. Court documents suggest that Momeni and Lee knew each other, and in the moments leading up to Lee's death, may have spoken about Momeni's sister. The San Francisco District Attorney stated that there may be a connection between Momeni’s sister and the circumstances leading to the fatal attack on Lee. Twitter CEO Elon Musk and other tech executives have capitalized on the tragedy to highlight the issue of crime in San Francisco, while several residents have criticized these tech leaders for exploiting the situation for their own benefit.

Klay Thompson made it clear that he believes the Warriors are the best team in the league when they are healthy. With a win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday, the Warriors will finish no worse than sixth in the Western Conference, avoiding the play-in tournament. However, even with postseason experience, the Warriors still have a tough road ahead. To reach their full potential for another NBA championship, they need to take care of the basketball, have good collective shot selection, and communicate on defense. Andrew Wiggins, who has been dealing with a personal family issue, will likely be ready for the postseason if Golden State stays out of the play-in tournament. Thompson's confidence in the team shows that the Warriors are hitting their stride, but they need to maintain and improve certain aspects of their game to make another deep run. Although the Warriors may not be viewed as the favorite in the West, especially if they face the Suns and Kevin Durant, their talent and experience should not be ignored.

Another storm system is approaching the heartland and is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms, including hail, damaging winds, and possibly tornadoes to the Mississippi Valley and storm-weary Little Rock, Arkansas, on Saturday, according to the FOX Forecast Center. Frank Herrera, a FOX Weather meteorologist, has warned that the severe storm threat is now at level 3 out of 5 and includes Little Rock right smack in the middle of it. Although St. Louis, Missouri, and Shreveport, Louisiana, are also in the risk zones, the tornado threat is relatively lower compared to the impacts of hail and gusty winds. The surface low is expected to strengthen, producing widespread thunderstorms that may become more organized during the evening. A tornado warning has been issued in Phelps and Maries County with a tornado watch across the St. Louis region through 10 p.m. Saturday. The warning includes most St. Louis metro counties on both sides of the state. The National Weather Service advises people to take shelter immediately in the case of an issued tornado warning.

Golden State Warriors' guard Gary Payton II will not be playing in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Sacramento Kings due to an illness, according to the NBA’s official injury report. Payton II was listed as “questionable” ahead of Thursday's game, but he didn’t attend the Warriors' pregame shootaround session due to his illness. The 30-year-old guard was acquired by Golden State at the trade deadline recently as a short-term solution when the team focused on the playoffs. Payton II showed his defensive skills in the two games he had played against the Kings, where he was the only Warriors’ player who could keep pace with Sacramento point guard De'Aaron Fox, who had been pivotal to Kings' progress. Golden State is already down to a 2-0 series deficit and instead will depend on guard Andrew Wiggins, who has been listed as “available,” to step up, as well as their other players, as they look to avoid elimination. Guard Jordan Poole, who has been struggling with ankle sprain, will also be playing. Draymond Green, the Warriors’ defensive player, remains out due to a one-game suspension, along with Payton II, with concerns regarding the team’s defensive capabilities against the fast-paced Kings.

Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors is set to make NBA history. Currently, with 4,212 assists to his name, Green is slated to surpass Hall of Famer Charles Barkley with just four more assists during Sunday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. Although Green hasn’t put up massive numbers, he is one of the best all-around players in the league, which includes being an elite passer and defender. His assists numbers have been consistent as in 64 out of 69 games this season, he has dished out 4+ assists. Given Green's playmaking abilities and the Warriors' strong offensive presence, the feat seems almost certain. Warriors are set to enter the playoffs as the No. 6 playoff seed in the Western Conference after a unique regular season. Despite some weaknesses, Green believes the defending league champions should be favored for the West Finals. In the past eight seasons, the Warriors have won the NBA Championship in four times and have been to the NBA Finals six times.

Despite a recent call for an "AI pause" by the Future of Life Institute, businesses using AI continue to advance the technology with confidence, according to business attorney David Miller. He argues that AI is already embedded in many businesses and “the problem with the pause is, if in the US we find a way to pause it, the capital and labor will move to other places." While some have called for a more proactive approach to AI regulation, Miller suggests that regulating the technology could be difficult. Instead, he suggests that the courts, which addressed more than 100 lawsuits involving AI in 2022, will eventually establish some parameters. Miller offers that industry associations could also set standards for AI use, but this would require cooperation among competitors. Meanwhile, a global survey shows 65% of business and IT executives believe there is data bias in their organization and 78% believe data bias will become a bigger concern as AI and machine learning become more widespread.

The Golden State Warriors played against the Sacramento Kings on Friday night in a pivotal late-season matchup. While the Kings have already clinched their playoff spot and are likely to finish as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, the game was critical for the defending champions. The only way for the Warriors to avoid the play-in tournament is by winning both their final two games. They currently sit in sixth place in the West and need to finish in the top six to avoid the tournament. Warriors coach Steve Kerr emphasized the importance of not letting their guard down and the necessity of winning both their final games. The Kings rested their top three scorers, which some believe could indicate that they are not taking the game seriously. Nevertheless, both teams have a chance of meeting again in the first round of the playoffs, which would be the first time for both to make the playoffs in the same season. The game ended with the Warriors winning 120-108, putting them in a stronger position to make the playoffs without the play-in tournament.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) urges major airlines flying to and from New York's busiest airports to reduce their flight schedules this summer to prevent overcrowding, reduce delays and keep air travel safe. American, Delta, JetBlue, and United Airlines, have all agreed to cut thousands of departures from May 15 to September 15, with the possibility of reclaiming them later when air traffic picks up. The plans come as a result of a severe air traffic controller shortage in the Northeast U.S that threatens to cause pervasive delays. FAA blames the pandemic for its inability to recruit and train new hires, resulting in only 54% of its staffing targets achieved. With limited personnel to handle complex airspaces, the chances of more air-travel chaos in the coming months are high.

As flights get reduced, passengers traveling to or from New York's JFK and LaGuardia Airports, Newark Liberty, and Reagan National in Washington, D.C., may face fewer booking options with up to 10% total departures slashed. JetBlue, which lists Boston as its focus city, also plans to reduce its flights between Boston Logan Airport and Newark Airport during July and August. Flyers are advised to check with their airlines on the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
