The shooting occurred near Northside Hospital Medical on West Peachtree Street. The suspect has not yet been found and is considered armed and dangerous. Surveillance images of the shooter have been released by the police, who are urging anyone with information on the person's whereabouts to call 911. Police have identified the shooter as 24-year-old Deion Patterson. At this time, no additional shots have been reported and officers are actively searching for the suspect and any additional victims. Local authorities, including the Atlanta police and fire departments, MARTA police, and the Georgia State Patrol, have responded to the scene. The identities and conditions of the injured have not been released yet. Buildings in the surrounding area have been advised to shelter in place, while police have blocked off traffic in the affected area. The investigation is ongoing.
A subway rider in Manhattan stepped in to pin down a ranting passenger, Jordan Neely, on a northbound F train, who started screaming in an aggressive manner, according to a witness. The straphanger, a Marine veteran, put Neely in a chokehold and kept him in that position for about 15 minutes. The train was halted at the Broadway-Lafayette Street/Bleecker Street station. Neely, who was living on the streets and had a history of mental health issues passed out following the chokehold, and the EMS workers at the station could not revive him.
The Marine veteran was taken into custody and later released without charges. The reason for his release is yet to be established. The disposition of the case is still ongoing. The key issue is, did the Marine veteran cross the line by using the chokehold which contributed to Neely's death? The medical examiner will have a final say on the cause of death. It was recorded that Neely had not assaulted anyone before his death. His lengthy arrest record suggests that the mental health and criminal justice systems in New York City failed him.
Police in Belgrade, Serbia are reporting that a 7th-grade student who opened fire at his school on Wednesday morning had a list of classmates he intended to kill. The student, identified only as Kosta Kecmanovic, used his father's gun to kill 8 students and a school guard before being arrested. Six other children and a teacher were injured in the attack. The shooting took place at Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in the Vracar neighborhood, on the first day of classes after the May Day holiday. Officials say Kecmanovic had been planning the attack for a month, during which time he drew sketches of the classrooms and composed the list of targets. Serbia has very strict gun laws, but reports indicate there are still tens of thousands of illegal firearms in circulation throughout the country. While mass shootings are rare, experts have long been warning about the potential dangers of having so many weapons in a nation with a history of conflicts and ongoing economic struggles.
Tucker Carlson's show at Fox News was abruptly cancelled last week, with various justifications publicly floated. However, the reason remains unclear. One theory is that it was connected to the $787.5m settlement reached with Dominion Voting Systems, a voting machines company who brought a defamation lawsuit over the broadcast of Donald Trump's lies about fraud in the 2020 election. In new on-set footage published by Media Matters for America, Carlson can be seen calling a lawyer for Dominion a "slimy motherfucker" who "triggered" him during a deposition last August. Fox News and Dominion have both denied any connection between the settlement and Carlson's show cancellation. Additionally, Carlson's casual reference to "how white men fight" in a conversation with a guest sparked new scrutiny of the host, leading to his ouster. Carlson had for years been explicit about his views on race and diversity in America, embracing white nationalist arguments and attacking immigrants.
Forecasters have stated that El Nino is arriving on the scene with the promise of new weather extremes brought about by warmer sea temperatures. For several years La Nina, which worsened Atlantic hurricanes and Western droughts, eased some of the worst temperature increases. A La Nina pattern has been described as a seesaw effect between La Nina and El Nino where El Nino usually brings a quieter hurricane season in the Atlantic and more hurricane activity in the Pacific. In the US, the change to El Nino promises some relief by lowering the risk of hurricanes in the East and drought in the West. El Nino’s warmer water temperatures can push the Pacific jet stream south resulting in dryer and warmer than usual areas in the northern US and Canada. In contrast, the US Gulf Coast and the Southeast are wetter than usual and have increased flooding. There is a 62% chance that El Nino will develop during the May-July period, increasing to over an 80% chance of El Nino by autumn.
Seven people, including two teenagers, were found dead on a property in Henryetta, Oklahoma, on Monday. Among the victims are Holly Guess and her three children, as well as aspiring teacher Rylee Elizabeth Allen and "amazing angel" Brittany Brewer, who were last seen with deceased registered sex offender Jesse McFadden. Holly Guess was married to McFadden, who failed to show in court on Monday for child pornography and solicitation of a minor charges. Authorities believe McFadden murdered the six people before ending his own life. McFadden had a history of rape and was convicted in 2003, serving nearly 17 years in prison. The parents of Ivy Webster, another victim, are warning parents of the dangers and the need to keep convicted sex offenders in jail. McFadden’s past was unknown to Ivy's parents, who allowed her to stay at the same property the night she went missing. The Okmulgee County authorities have not yet released information on how the victims died and who killed them.
Former President Donald Trump will not present any witnesses in the civil trial over allegations of rape against writer E. Jean Carroll, his attorney told U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan. Trump's team initially had an expert witness lined up to counter Carroll's claims, before the witness cited health issues. The aforementioned trial centers on claims by Carroll that Trump raped her in a Manhattan department store, while Trump himself calls it a "hoax" and a "con job." Trump is being sued by Carroll for defamation and battery. Playing parts of Trump's deposition from last October, lawyers for Carroll pointed out that Trump calls her allegations "ridiculous" and that she fabricated the entire story. The deposition will be played in full on Thursday, as Stoynoff, another accuser of Trump's, testified on Wednesday about him allegedly accosting her while working at his Florida's Mar-a-Lago resort in 2005. Carroll has said that the #MeToo movement inspired her to finally speak out in 2019, two decades after the alleged attack.
Russia has claimed that Ukraine has attempted to strike the Kremlin with drones. The purported drone attack was said to have been carried out overnight. The Kremlin has claimed that the attack was successfully repulsed, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin was unhurt. There has been no confirmation of the alleged attack from Ukraine. The Kremlin has provided no evidence to support its claim of the attempted attack. In the claims made by the Kremlin, it stated that two unmanned aerial vehicles had been aimed at the Kremlin, but "timely actions taken by the military and special services, with the use of radar warfare systems," disabled them. The drones supposedly fell on the Kremlin's territory, resulting in "no casualties" or "material damage." The Kremlin regarded the alleged attack as "a planned terrorist act and an assassination attempt on the president," which could trigger "retaliatory measures wherever and whenever is deemed necessary."
Text messages obtained from redacted court filings in the Dominion Voting Systems case revealed that former Fox News host Tucker Carlson made a racist comment and expressed support for a mob of Trump supporters beating up a person. According to the New York Times, Carlson wrote, “I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it,” while watching a video of Trump supporters attacking an Antifa member. Carlson went on to explain that watching videos of fights between political opponents increased his apathy toward violence. Fox News' board of directors reportedly found the message alarming, prompting Carlson's firing. The announcement of Carlson’s departure from the network followed a settlement between Fox News and Dominion for $787.5 million over the network's false reporting of election lies. Carlson had also been accused of sexist behavior by his former top booker, Abby Grossberg.
On Monday, seven bodies were found at a rural Oklahoma property. Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice confirmed that Jesse McFadden, a known sex offender, appeared to be among the dead. On Wednesday, authorities announced that McFadden shot six people in the head before turning the gun on himself, in what is believed to be a murder-suicide. Victims include Ivy Webster and Brittany Brewer, both of whom had been reported missing and in danger since Sunday night, and Holly Guess and her three children. Police have not identified the other unidentified victims. McFadden had spent 16 years in prison and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday for his trial on charges of soliciting child pornography. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reports that all of the victims died from apparent gunshot wounds. The firearm used was a 9 mm handgun purchased by Holly McFadden in January 2022. It remains unclear when the killings occurred. McFadden's family has revealed that he was a "con man" and a "master manipulator."
Former President Donald Trump's legal team in the civil battery and defamation trial brought against him by E. Jean Carroll will not put on a defense case, his attorney Joe Tacopina announced on Wednesday. The former magazine columnist accuses Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s and later defaming her when he denied her claims, suggesting she made up the story. Her lawyers argue that Trump's statements harmed Carroll's reputation and her career. During Trump's video deposition taken last October, which was shown to the jury, he testified that he rarely, "if ever," shopped at the location where the alleged rape took place. He also said that he never read Carroll's book or excerpt from her book in which she accused him of raping her. Carroll, encouraged by the impact of the #MeToo movement, filed the suit in accordance with New York law, which allows survivors a new window to file claims. Will the suit hold Trump accountable for his actions, or will the former President walk away again?
Atlanta police are searching for a gunman in Midtown Atlanta after multiple people were shot near Northside Hospital Medical. One person has been confirmed dead and three others have been transported to the hospital. Police have released pictures of the suspect, who is still at large. Mayor Andre Dickens is in close contact with Atlanta police but has not released any further information. As the events unfold, multiple agencies including Atlanta police, Atlanta fire, MARTA police, Georgia Tech police and the Georgia State Patrol have responded to the situation. People in the area are asked to secure their building and shelter in place, while anyone not in the area is asked to avoid it. The investigation is still ongoing.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Russia accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate their president, Vladimir Putin, with a drone strike on the Kremlin. The two explosions over the Kremlin were captured in video footage, appearing to show two drones detonating over the Kremlin 15 minutes apart. While the Kremlin claimed the attacks were foiled and the alleged drones were destroyed, Ukraine denied involvement in the alleged strike. The Kremlin called the drone attack an "attempt on the President's life" and blamed Ukraine, but Kyiv said that accusation was more appropriately directed at Russia. The U.S. intelligence agencies were still trying to determine the cause of the explosions. Some experts argue that the alleged assassination attempt could provide Russia with an excuse for a major escalation of the conflict, while others believe that a drone attack at the heart of Russian power would be an audacious move by Kyiv with serious repercussions. The incident highlights the rising tensions between the two countries and the potential for further conflict.
The Oklahoma community is rallying to support the families of the seven victims who were found dead on a property in Henryetta, including five teenagers and two adults. Among the deceased were Ivy Webster and Brittany Brewer, who had been missing since early May 2023. Several fundraisers have been established to help the families cover the costs of funeral expenses and other expenses that they might incur at this time. Buffalo Wild Wings in Tulsa and Oklahoma City have offered to cover funeral expenses for the two missing teens' families. A GoFundMe has been set up for Ivy’s parents. The Brewer family also has a separate GoFundMe page, with funds going towards "other expenses they will undoubtedly incur at this time." Another GoFundMe campaign is in support of 35-year-old Holly Guess and her three children, whose mother identified them as four of the other people found dead. Funds from this effort will also assist with funeral expenses and memorial services. The citizens of Oklahoma aim to ease the burden of the families of those lost in this painful tragedy.
After a tragic mass shooting in Texas last week leading to the deaths of five individuals, including one child, Governor Greg Abbott issued a press release calling the victims "illegal immigrants". This move has been called out as a way to deflect attention from the issue of gun control in the state. Reports suggest that the shooter, Francisco Oropesa, had been deported multiple times in the past and should not have had access to firearms that led to the shooting, regardless of the immigration status of those involved.
One victim was reported to have legal immigration status, raising doubts about the accuracy of Abbott's press release even though his office later contradicted it. The Texas Governor is known for his pro-gun stance and vocal opposition to immigration, with critics pointing out that his use of words like "illegal immigrants" perpetuates and incites violence. This tactic is similar to rhetoric used by then-President Trump in 2019, which was echoed by a gunman who attacked a Walmart in El Paso. Abbott's press release comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of politicians and their responsibility in stemming gun violence in the country.
President Joe Biden is deploying 1,500 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in response to a predicted increase in migrants as Title 42 ends. The public health policy, implemented by former President Donald Trump during the pandemic, allows for the quick expulsion of border-crossers and is set to expire on May 11. Lindsey Graham, Republican Senator from South Carolina, praised Trump’s deployment of troops to the border in 2018 for being effective in combatting border issues, and, conversely, criticized the Biden administration’s decision to do the same. However, the troops will focus on administrative and monitoring functions to support Customs and Border Patrol, not on law enforcement. There are already 2,500 National Guard troops at the border, with Biden’s troops set to arrive on May 10th. Democrats previously criticized Trump’s deployments, calling them political and damaging to the country when done right before the midterms. Yet, Democrats have not exhibited vocal opposition to Biden’s decision. The purpose of the additional troops is to provide support to border officials to combat a predicted surge in migrants as Title 42 ends, resulting in a potential blowback from Democrats.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has stressed the importance of consistency in the team, which has been lacking throughout the season. He has reportedly been drilling this idea into his teammates, and Liverpool's current three-game winning streak shows that his demands may finally be heard. With a win against Tottenham, Liverpool can jump to fifth place in the Premier League, which could be massive in securing a spot in Europe for the next season.
Henderson praised the team's character and response to setbacks, which "underpinned a lot of our success in previous seasons." Liverpool beat West Ham United in a difficult situation, and the squad responded excellently to going one goal down. He also suggested that consistency is something every football team should have as part of their armor, as it breeds confidence and a belief that, even if caught by a sucker-punch, it doesn't mean that they have to go on and lose the fight. It remains to be seen whether the squad can maintain their improved form and push for Europe at the business end of the season.
During the First Take show on Wednesday, JJ Redick threw shade at Boston Celtics' legend, Bob Cousy, by referencing his bad performance in an elimination game back in 1954. Although Cousy was one of the greatest players in NBA history, Redick spoke of him disdainfully. His remarks were made during the intro of the show, where he also gave a hilarious impression of Stephen A. Smith. Redick's comments might not have been appreciated by some fans, but his humor and antics are characteristic of the highly entertaining First Take show. While Cousy spent 13 years of his professional career leading the Boston Celtics to win six championships in seven years, Redick never won a championship during his decade-long NBA career. However, he made significant contributions to the teams he played for. Redick's introduction to the show, which included the sly criticism of Cousy, was filled with laughter from his co-hosts and audiences.
The Boston Celtics have once again stumbled, losing their second-round playoff opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Analysts are now questioning the Celtics’ championship DNA after the team’s lethargic loss to the undermanned Sixers. James Harden led the way for Philadelphia with 45 points, while Boston failed to muster any defensive stoppage. Moreover, Boston has developed a pattern of nearly losing to weaker teams resulting in questions on whether it has championship DNA. The Celtics finished second in the Eastern Conference this season and are still expected to advance based on their excellent form during the regular season. However, the team seems to be making it difficult for themselves in the postseason. As they head into games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Boston needs to rekindle their intense and competitive spirit if they are to retake the series lead against the surging Sixers.
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum joined an elite group of active players in Game 1 of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, tying Paul George for having 6 career postseason games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds, according to NBA.com. George has endorsed Tatum for the MVP race with admiration for his game, and referring to Tatum as “incredible.” At only 25, Tatum has already become one of the best players in the NBA, and he still has room to grow. As the playoffs continue, Tatum is poised to climb even further up the impressive playoff list. In Game 1 against the 76ers, the Celtics collapsed over the final few minutes, losing to the Sixers 102-104, and Tatum found himself the victim of a non-basketball act by Philadelphia’s PJ Tucker. A wild swing by Tucker caught Tatum below the belt, but to the Celtics’ dismay, the officiating crew failed to call a foul. Nevertheless, the Celtics will look to bounce back and Tatum will continue to prove his worth as one of the most elite players in the association.
Jaylen Brown led all scorers with 32 points, helping Boston Celtics defeat Atlanta Hawks 128-120 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Brown made 13 of his 25 field goal attempts and 6-of-8 threes to help the Celtics advance to the second round where they will face the Philadelphia 76ers. With four out of five Celtics starters, including Brown, shooting over 50% from the field, they were able to resist the late comeback by the Hawks. Atlanta's general manager, Landry Fields, talked about John Collins' future during an end-of-season press conference, stating that the team values Collins, but is not willing to give him away. Collins has been subject to trade rumors in each transaction window over the last two years. Jaylen Brown, along with the team's inability to maintain a late lead, was also a focus after Game 1 against the 76ers, where the Celtics lost 119-115. Brown, however, disagreed that his slowing transition play had a significant part in the outcome of the game.
According to sources, Grammy winner Taylor Swift is in a romantic relationship with Matthew 'Matty' Healy, the frontman of the rock band The 1975. The two are expected to go public with their romance during Swift's The Eras Tour concert in Nashville, Texas. "She and Matty are madly in love. It's super-early days, but it feels right," says a source close to Swift. Swift had recently ended her six-year-long relationship with actor Joe Alwyn. Both Swift and Healy have been touring over the past few weeks, so it's been a lot of Face-Timing and texting but she cannot wait to see him again, added the source. There is no official statement from either of them yet to confirm or deny the rumor. Swift and Healy first briefly dated almost ten years ago but the timing did not work out. The two had collaborated with one another on Swift's album 'Midnights' in 2022, but the work was not included in the final cut of the album.
The Philadelphia 76ers announced their "Assists for Safe Communities" initiative, in which eight players will donate $760 per assist recorded by the team during Games 1-4 against the Boston Celtics to local gun violence prevention organizations. The players have each selected a specific organization to donate, ranging from youth development programs to victim support and trauma services. The Sixers hope to use their platform to help address the serious issue of gun violence in their communities. The program is part of the 76ers Gun Violence Prevention Platform and the funds raised from each game will benefit local non-profit organizations. Head Coach Doc Rivers expressed that gun violence is a serious issue and that as humans, coaches, and players alike, they all have a responsibility to use their platform and help prevent gun violence. Each group of 76ers players will team up in pairs to sponsor a local beneficiary organization based on their own beliefs and how they connect with the organization.
The US Navy is facing backlash after hiring active-duty drag queen Joshua Kelley as the "face of its recruitment drive." Kelley, who identifies as non-binary and performs as a woman named Harpy Daniels, is one of five planned "Digital Ambassadors" aimed at attracting a diverse workforce. However, critics argue that prioritizing diversity and inclusivity over military readiness is harmful to recruitment efforts. Some have pointed to the Navy's "challenging recruiting environment" and failure to meet recruitment targets for reserve personnel and active duty officers. Kelley's drag act has been publicized since 2018, and some have questioned the initiative's effectiveness, with one Twitter user sarcastically stating, "The Village People couldn't recruit gays to the Navy before, so I don't know why they think it works now." However, Kelley insists that they have "not once had a bad experience as a gay man in the military." The debate over the Navy's recruitment strategy continues, with critics arguing that PR and inclusivity do not win wars or safeguard the nation from threats.
Tigres and Puebla will face each other in a crucial match for Liga MX qualification on Saturday night at the Universitario stadium. With only one point in their last 5 games, Tigres is in seventh place and has yet to secure qualification for the knockout phase of the Clausura tournament. Despite their recent struggles, Tigres is still favored to win the match against Puebla due to their more qualified squad, which includes players like Gignac, Rafael Carioca, and Luis Quinones. However, Puebla has shown a good ability to play on the counterattacks, recently beating Juarez 2-0 while playing away from home. With a chance to enter the group of 12 clubs with a win, Puebla will be looking to capitalize on Tigres' current bad form. The match is expected to be a close and decisive one for both clubs. Fans can catch the match on Thursday, April 20th, at 10:05 pm ET, and bettors can take advantage of the moneyline odds offered by TUDN.
