California Governor Gavin Newsom's progressive agenda may have to be scaled back or delayed due to the state's budget deficit. The state's finances are highly dependent on revenues from income taxes paid by its highest earners, and therefore subject to the ebbs and flows of the stock market, bonuses to executives, and initial public offerings. The COVID-19 stimulus funding boosted state income taxes, resulting in a surplus. However, the expected shortfall was predicted by economist Chris Thornberg. The wise course of action would have been to set the surplus aside and not spend it instead of dedicating it to one-time programs, Thornberg said.
The governor and lawmakers provided $9.2 billion in gas rebates to 32 million Californians, which, while temporary, was still costly. Newsom has repeatedly emphasized his decision to restrict most new spending to one-time funds. The revised budget closes a projected $32 billion budget shortfall while protecting investments in education, health care, public safety, housing and homelessness, and climate action. The Governor's budget prepares for continued economic uncertainty due to global economic issues while maintaining investments in Californian priorities. However, Newsom rejected calls to further subsidize public-transit operators, proposing a $2.2 billion reduction on transit infrastructure and no new funding for local public-transit providers.
The trial of Lori Vallow Daybell, accused of the murders of her two youngest children, 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, and her husband's previous wife, Tammy Daybell, continues in Ada County Court. Her defense attorney, Jim Archibald, believes that Vallow's husband, Chad Daybell, a former gravedigger, and self-described prophet and author of apocalyptic novels, is the mastermind behind the killings. He argues that Vallow was a devoted, loving mother who was manipulated by her husband's religious ideology and obsessed with zombies. Vallow's bizarre beliefs and strange religious talk, according to Archibald, do not prove that she wanted her children dead. Madison County Prosecutor Rob Wood argued otherwise, saying that Vallow was driven by money, power, and sex. The prosecution accuses Vallow of manipulating her brother and lover into carrying out the murders. Prosecutors allege that Vallow and Daybell, who met at a Utah conference in 2018 and were both married to other people, began an affair that blossomed into an obsession with his apocalyptic novels and lifestyle, resulting in the murders. The trial continues, but the question remains, who is ultimately responsible for the deaths of three people, Lori Vallow Daybell or someone else?
CNN faced criticism from multiple fronts for its decision to host former President Donald Trump's town hall event on May 11. During the event, Trump once again repeated his false claims of a rigged election, derailed several questions from moderator Kaitlan Collins, and even insulted a former writer he is accused of sexually abusing. Some viewers, journalists, and network employees felt that CNN should not have given Trump a platform to spew his lies, but host Anderson Cooper defended the decision. Cooper acknowledged that many people were upset with the outcome, but argued that it was important to stay abreast of Trump's comments in case he is reelected in 2024. However, viewers on social media criticized Cooper's speech and accused him of being out of touch with the consequences of Trump's actions. The backlash raises the question of whether media outlets should provide a platform for politicians with a history of spreading misinformation and harmful rhetoric.
After more than three years, Title 42, the pandemic-era policy that severely limited immigration to the U.S., almost halting the processing of asylum applications, has ended. With concerns of an unprecedented influx of migrants along the southern U.S. border, security officials braced themselves for a wave of up to 150,000 migrants hoping to cross over, but saw similar patterns as the previous days. However, the start of a new era of immigration may still take months to come into clearer focus. For migrants along the Juarez-El Paso border, there was an understanding that Title 42 had lifted, but confusion still remained about what that would mean for the future. Despite the end of Title 42, it is essential to recognize the issue of immigration is not just about the admission of people in desperate humanitarian need, but subject to partisan polarization, making it the fulcrum of polarization across America according to March polling from Ipsos. The next chapter for U.S. immigration politics starts now, and the question remains, will both parties and immigrant rights activists come together to establish a consensus around newcomers' positive place in America?

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has warned migrants that the end of Title 42, a pandemic-era border restriction which allowed most asylum seekers to be quickly turned back, does not mean that the border is open. The policy, which was put into effect by the Trump administration and will expire at midnight tonight, has been widely criticized, with advocates citing humanitarian concerns. Mayorkas stressed that the Biden administration has been preparing for the end of Title 42 for the past two years, but acknowledged that the end of the policy will pose a challenge since large numbers of migrants are expected to attempt to cross the US-Mexico border in hopes of gaining asylum. Anyone who arrives at the border after midnight tonight will be presumed ineligible for asylum and subject to consequences for unlawful entry. The Biden administration has been criticized by both Republicans and Democrats for its handling of the border, with many criticizing the current system as inefficient and inhumane towards migrants.
Former US Marine, Daniel Penny, appeared in court last Friday to be charged with the manslaughter of Jordan Neely who died on May 1st on a subway train in New York. Mr Penny, who did not enter a plea, is accused of causing Mr Neely’s death by placing him in a chokehold when Mr Neely started to act aggressively. Those who witnessed the incident did not report Mr Penny to the police at the time and said that he could not have possibly known that his actions would lead to Mr Neely’s death. The incident became a public matter after a journalist captured the altercation on video which circulated on social media. Following its release, numerous activists, journalists, and politicians called for murder or lynch charges against Penny before all the facts surrounding the incident had been established. Subsequently, it has been revealed that Mr Neely had a history of violent assaults on the subway and was struggling with mental illness. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recorded more than 2,500 assaults on transport staff and police officers in 2022, indicating that improved provision of mental health services across the US is neccessary.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Title 42 health measure was enforced by the US Border Patrol to expel certain migrants, including asylum seekers, to Mexico. However, the Biden administration recently lifted this public health order just as the administration was already receiving criticisms over the chaotic state of the US-Mexico border. As a result, lawsuits were rolled in from both the left and right, and Donald Trump voiced his disapproval over the decision. There are concerns that the end of Title 42 will exacerbate the already climbing numbers of illegal border crossings. The US-Mexico border was marked by mass releases of migrants in overcrowded holding facilities, which began even before Title 42 ended, and there are apprehensions that this trend will continue. Some have called out the Biden administration's border policy for prioritizing stealthy and quick admission of as many illegal migrants as possible while appearing to avoid "bad optics". The surge in illegal border crossing may tumble further after Title 42 expires, while the Biden administration's strategy is called into question.
Late Thursday evening, a federal judge in Florida blocked the US government from releasing migrants without court dates, a practice that had been used in the past to relieve overcrowding. The order went into effect when Title 42, the public emergency health order, expired. The US District Judge ordered that the federal government should stop the release of migrants without court dates and restrict them to border patrol facilities until their cases are heard in courts. As a result, many people fear that this ruling could lead to overcrowding and unsafe conditions in border patrol facilities. Currently, there are over 27,000 people in US Customs and Border Protection custody throughout the country. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called the ruling harmful and said that the Department of Justice is considering their options. The ruling would prevent the government from processing, screening, and vetting individuals and releasing them so that they can go into the immigration enforcement proceedings. The temporary ruling could put a strain on border communities.
Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, was granted bail two weeks after his dramatic arrest over corruption charges, which set off a deadly outpouring of anger against Pakistan's military. Khan's party filed a petition challenging the illegal land acquisition charges against him by the National Accountability Bureau. He accused General Syed Asim Munir, the army chief, of being behind his arrest. Khan's arrest has prompted a wave of unrest across major cities in Pakistan. The event raised concerns due to a renewed worry over Pakistan's economic stability. Moody's Investors Service said Monday that Pakistan could default without an International Monetary Fund bailout and warned its financing options beyond June were uncertain. Khan's arrest could be considered the most dramatic event of the decade for any other country, however, in the absence of any official condemnation by the British government, many ask if they were consulted or even tacitly consented to the arrest. Sheikh Rasheed, the country's newly appointed home minister, has asked people to be calmer and not expect any more arrests in the future.
Newly released reports indicate that Jamie Komoroski, the woman accused of crashing into a newlywed couple on their way back from their wedding, had a blood alcohol level of 0.261%. The legal limit in South Carolina is 0.08%. Komoroski stands charged with three counts of felony DUI and one count of vehicular homicide. Reports from the Folly Beach Department of Public Safety describe the chaotic crash scene, with victims lying throughout the crash site, and officers providing medical attention to multiple people, including the bride and groom. Samantha Miller unfortunately passed away at the scene, and her husband, Aric Hutchinson, is currently recovering from multiple injuries, including broken bones and brain injuries. When questioned about the incident, Komoroski allegedly told officers at the scene that she had only had one beer and one tequila pineapple mixed drink an hour before, but refused to perform any sobriety tests. She was found to be driving in the opposite direction of her house at the time of the crash while traveling at 65 miles per hour in a 20-mile-per-hour zone.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom sparked controversy this week when media outlets labeled him as being opposed to proposals from California's Reparations Task Force. This came after Newsom's office issued a statement in response to the task force's approval of a final set of recommendations on how the state could compensate its Black residents for slavery and racial prejudice. Newsom was portrayed in headlines as declining to support reparations payments of cash, but he later clarified that he is "not backing away from cash payments." He wants to wait for the report in its entirety to arrive on his desk before making any decisions, says Newsom’s chief communications adviser, Anthony York. The task force is pushing the state to adopt a K-12 curriculum that teaches kids about "systemic racism" and "advances the ideology of Black liberation." Critics suggest that the report is sketchy, as it is unclear how the task force wants California to make the teaching of systemic racism a part of the curriculum. Although the state legislature has the final say on what action to take regarding reparations, Newsom needs to sign any measures lawmakers produce into law.
The Russian military’s effort to seize control of Ukraine’s Bakhmut has backfired. After months of trying to capture the city, Moscow’s Ministry of Defence confirmed Friday that its forces were retreating from Bakhmut to "more advantageous defensive positions" north of the city. While Ukraine denies reports of a counteroffensive, their forces confirm making gains in Bakhmut in some pockets. Russia has sustained heavy losses in its efforts and has been pushed on the back foot, with Ukraine preparing to launch an attack at some point this spring or summer. Russia’s defeat at Bakhmut, and inability to make gains elsewhere in Ukraine, is emblematic of broader problems for its military. Vladimir Putin is likely to have scaled back his goals in Ukraine to focus only on Eastern Ukraine, US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told lawmakers in a briefing earlier this month. It is the biggest Berlin has provided since Russia's invasion.
Despite being a midseason acquisition for a relatively low price, Josh Hart has proven to be a key player for the New York Knicks. However, as the team faces elimination in the playoffs, some are questioning if the Knicks' reliance on Hart is also their downfall. Coach Tom Thibodeau has been criticized for trying to mold his gameplan around Hart instead of utilizing other players, such as Quentin Grimes. Despite this, Hart's value has continued to rise, with rumors suggesting he could be worth $15-18 million annually in free agency this summer. Despite this, analysts believe the Knicks and Hart are likely to reach a contract extension, providing some stability for a player who has bounced around several teams in the past. As the Knicks fight to stay alive in the playoffs, the question remains if Hart will be the key to a comeback or the factor that ultimately brings their season to a close.
The Miami Heat are a win away from making their third trip to the Eastern Conference finals in the last four years after they defeated the New York Knicks 109-101 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Led by Jimmy Butler's 27 points and 10 assists and Bam Adebayo's 23 points and 13 rebounds, the Heat took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Max Strus scored 16 for the Heat, while Kyle Lowry added 15 and Caleb Martin scored 10. Jalen Brunson finished with 32 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, while RJ Barrett scored 24 and Julius Randle scored 20 before fouling out. Game 5 awaits in New York tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. The Knicks are hoping to come back from a 3-1 deficit to fight their way to reach the conference finals for the first time since 2000. Will the Knicks be able to make an epic comeback, or will the Heat end their hopes?
The New York Knicks are facing a difficult road ahead after losing two of the first three games of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series against the Miami Heat. The Knicks need to address two major issues: coaching and Julius Randle's lack of consistency. The Knicks' head coach, Tom Thibodeau, must adapt and make in-game decisions quicker to keep up with Erik Spoelstra's Heat. On the other hand, Randle must focus on playing within the team's system and avoid taking ill-advised shots. His questionable shot selection and inconsistency have been significant issues for the Knicks throughout the series.
The team must rely on better shot selection and execution, especially in the second quarter, where they've struggled the most. Players like sixth man Immanuel Quickley, who is doubtful for the next game, need to play better if they're healthy enough to suit up. The Knicks need a more disciplined approach from the coaching staff and players if they want to regain their footing and take back homecourt advantage in South Beach. Addressing these issues could help the Knicks turn this series around and avoid elimination in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Nigeria will be hosting the U19 Boys Africa Championship for volleyball in August 2021. The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) made the announcement on Wednesday, May 26, noting that the tournament will be held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. The tournament will feature 10 teams competing for five spots in the U19 World Championship to be held in Iran next year.
Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria's hosting of the tournament shows the country's commitment to the development of volleyball in Africa. The Nigerian Volleyball Federation has said that it will ensure strict compliance with COVID-19 health protocols during the tournament to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators.
The U19 Boys Africa Championship is expected to bring together talented young players from across Africa as they showcase their skills and compete for the opportunity to represent Africa in the World Championship. With Nigeria hosting the tournament, it is also an opportunity to showcase the country's potential as a sports destination in Africa.
The Warriors have shown they won't go down without a fight, winning Game 5 against the Lakers 121-106. With the series now at 3-2 in favor of the Lakers, the Warriors will look to force a Game 7 with a win in Game 6. Draymond Green led the way for Golden State with 20 points and 10 rebounds, his first playoff 20-point double-double since 2019. Stephen Curry and the Warriors' supporting cast stepped up in the win, despite going cold from beyond the arc. The Lakers now face concerns regarding Anthony Davis's health, as he left Game 5 with a head injury after taking an elbow from Kevon Looney. Initial reports suggest Davis avoided a concussion, but he may still enter the NBA's concussion protocol. If he does, the Lakers will be without their most important player, who has been leading the team in scoring and rebounding during the playoffs while anchoring their defense. The Warriors will deploy various strategies to limit Davis's defensive impact in Game 6 and try to keep their season alive.
Derrick Rose recently expressed his thoughts on possibly having his No. 1 jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls. Although he has not thought much of it, Rose acknowledged that the idea would be cool, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. At 22 years old, Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history and also won the Rookie of the Year award during his time with the Bulls. He hopes his career accolades are deserving enough for him to join the ranks of Bulls greats like Jerry Sloan, Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen. Despite this, Rose is more focused on what he would say to the Chicago fans if the time comes for his jersey retirement ceremony. Rose played for the Bulls for eight seasons, taking them to seven straight playoff appearances, but unfortunately fell short of making it past the conference finals. Despite being plagued by knee injuries, Rose achieved much success with the Bulls and was a key player during his tenure in Chicago.
After the Los Angeles Lakers' Game 4 win over the Golden State Warriors, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr accused the Lakers of flopping and being rewarded with charge calls on illegal screens. Lakers guard Dennis Schroder responded to this criticism on a live stream and defended his team's actions, stating that the referees should have recognized the Warriors' actions as illegal screens. He also pointed out that when teams shoot 53 threes, it's difficult to get to the free throw line. While flopping remains an accepted part of the game, it seems that it is becoming increasingly harder for referees to differentiate between what is real and what isn't. This statement raises questions as to whether players are still moving on most screens in today's game. While Kerr believes the fouls called on the Lakers were due to flopping, Schroder believes that they were simply bringing attention to the Warriors' illegal actions. The debate surrounding flopping is likely to continue, and it will be interesting to see how the Lakers and Warriors approach Game 6.
Miami Heat forward Kevin Love has expressed his admiration for teammate Jimmy Butler, saying "He is the best closer in the game in my opinion." This statement carries weight, considering Love has played with top NBA players such as Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, and Donovan Mitchell. Butler recently led the Heat in an upset victory in game four against the Milwaukee Bucks, scoring an all-time high 56 points. Butler has been proving his worth in the Heat's recent playoff games, with impressive averages of 31.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game in this postseason. Love's praise merely corroborates the excellent postseason Butler is having thus far. The Heat is currently leading the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals thanks to Butler's impressive performances. The Heat's culture of always prioritizing winning and winning now could be the reason for Butler's success. The professionalism and level of preparedness in the team have enabled them to upset stronger opponents during this year's postseason. Kevin Love's contribution and experience have also been instrumental to Miami's success this postseason.
Despite star performances from Jalen Brunson, who scored 41 points, and Quentin Grimes, who played through the pain of a knee injury, the New York Knicks were unable to avoid elimination as they fell to the Miami Heat 96-92 on Friday night. With Immanuel Quickley still out with a sprained ankle, coach Tom Thibodeau made the questionable decision to play Brunson and Grimes for the full 48 minutes, leaving the team short on rotation options. While it is admirable that the players played through their injuries and put in an impressive effort, it may have ultimately cost the Knicks the game. The Heat outscored the Knicks by six points when Brunson and Grimes were on the bench, indicating just how thin the team was without them. It remains to be seen whether the extra workload for Brunson and Grimes will have any long-term effects, but the Knicks will now have an extended offseason to evaluate their roster and potentially make changes for next season. Meanwhile, Miami will move on to face either Boston or Philadelphia in the conference finals.
The Boston Mountain Solid Waste District is planning to raise the assessment fee charged on all solid waste collected in Washington and Madison counties from $1.50 to $2 per ton to finance the implementation of waste diversion programs. According to Robyn Reed, the director of the district, the increase will generate an additional $150,000 to $200,000 annually towards financing the new programs. The money will go into a special fund designated for this purpose. In terms of individuals' costs, the increase is less than 1% of the overall cost of waste disposal. The board must approve the proposed changes after a public comment period, and the changes will be sent to the Secretary of State's Office in Little Rock and then to the state Legislature for approval. Reed believes that it will take at least six months to complete the process. In addition to funding household hazardous waste disposal, recycling, and environmental enforcement and education programs, the new waste-diversion programs will comprise immediate, short-term, and long-term options, including a waste characterization study to identify the volume and types of solid waste being created in the region.
Los Angeles Lakers power forward, Mo Bamba, has been ruled out for Tuesday's Game 1 contest against the Golden State Warriors due to left ankle soreness. According to sources, Bamba received an injection to treat the soreness and was using a crutch to walk at the team's shootaround. This injury report has listed Bamba as questionable before the game, and he may return for the next game. Though the Lakers' backup centers are Wenyen Gabriel and Tristan Thompson, Bamba, who played just 88 minutes total in the regular season for Los Angeles, figured unlikely to get many minutes in the matchup anyway because of his defensive limitations. However, his absence meant that the Lakers would be more likely to turn to Rui Hachimura/LeBron James frontcourt that wasn't effective versus Memphis. This grouping is unlikely to do better against ace rebounder Kevon Looney. Although Bamba's absence may not have a huge impact on the rotation, it is still a significant loss for the Lakers and may affect their performance against the Warriors.
