A new NBC News poll shows that while former President Trump still leads a hypothetical GOP primary field, 60% of Americans believe that he shouldn't campaign for the White House in 2024 -- including approximately one-third of Republicans. At the same time, 70% of Americans believe that President Biden shouldn't seek a second term, though 41% of registered voters overall said they would probably or definitely vote for him in the general election if he runs again. Furthermore, 51% of Democrats don't want Biden to run again, citing his age as a major reason.
The poll comes as President Biden is preparing for an expected campaign launch, which could come as early as this week. If he does run, he would have a significant advantage in campaign funds, as he is not likely to face a serious challenger in the Democratic primaries. By comparison, the Republican Party is expected to have a fiercely competitive primary, with former President Trump as the current front-runner. Trump lost the 2020 election by over 7 million votes and most of the candidates he endorsed in the 2022 midterm elections were defeated. Trump also faces several lawsuits and possible indictments, while Biden's campaign would have several major things in its favor, including potentially a massive funding advantage.
At the annual Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition's spring kickoff, Republican presidential candidates pitched their platforms to Christian conservatives in Iowa, a vital voting bloc for the upcoming primary. However, two front-runners, Ron DeSantis and Kristi Noem, were not in attendance, while former President Donald Trump addressed the crowd virtually. The forum's recurring theme was on everyone's stance on abortion, with the topic taking center stage as GOP politicians emphasized their support for restricting access to abortion, opposing transgender rights, and promoting school choice. Despite criticism from some abortion opponents over his previous stance on abortion, Trump focused on his judicial appointments, which included successfully appointing three Supreme Court judges who helped overturn the Roe v. Wade decision. Lesser-known presidential candidates Larry Elder, Perry Johnson, and Vivek Ramaswamy also spoke at the event, with the latter anticipating a head-to-head against Trump soon in the primaries. Overall, the event highlighted the continuing polarization in American politics, with the GOP's traditional stance of conservatism seeming increasingly fundamentalist.
Less than 100 American diplomats and their families were evacuated from Khartoum, Sudan, on Sunday by US military personnel, after fierce violence erupted last week between the regular army and paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces. Over 100 US troops from the Navy Seals and Army Special Forces were dispatched to Ethiopia then Sudan, enduring less than an hour on the ground. The US embassy in Khartoum is now closed, and there are no consular services available for citizens residing in Sudan. US President Joe Biden expressed thanks to partners Djibouti, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia, stating their critical support has enabled the mission’s success. The French ministry of foreign affairs has announced it is beginning to evacuate its citizens and diplomatic staff from the country, with European citizens and those from “allied partner countries” also assisted. There is yet no formal ceasefire.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) accused President Biden of being "afraid" to negotiate about the budget and debt ceiling, blaming him for the potential default on loans that could occur if the U.S. fails to raise the debt ceiling by June. McCarthy stated that Biden's actions could jeopardize Medicare and Social Security, as "not just the Highway Trust Fund, but Medicare and Social Security becomes insolvent, so it automatically gets cut." McCarthy introduced a budget plan to members of his party last week that would raise the debt ceiling by over $1 trillion but also return federal spending to 2022 levels and cap growth at 1 percent annually. He criticized Biden for ignoring the issue and not negotiating since their meeting in February. Republicans led the way in putting forward a plan, McCarthy said. However, it should be noted that Democrats have not yet presented a proposal themselves.

According to sources familiar with the decision, President Joe Biden is expected to tap Julie Chavez Rodriguez as his 2024 re-election campaign manager. Chavez Rodriguez is a senior adviser to the president and the director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, and is one of the most prominent Latinas in the administration, and also the granddaughter of the late labor leader Cesar Chavez. She previously worked in Harris' Senate office, as a senior official in the Office of Public Engagement in President Barack Obama's White House and as the director of programs at the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation. Biden is expected to announce his bid for re-election as early as Tuesday. However, some are concerned about his low approval ratings, with only 41% of Americans approving of his performance in a recent NBC News poll, and believe he should not run for re-election. Despite this, Chavez Rodriguez would bring significant experience to Biden's team, having worked in both the Biden and Obama White Houses, and she served as deputy campaign manager of his 2020 campaign.
The National Weather Service Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for a Severe Storm due to a Full Halo Coronal Mass Ejection that occurred on Friday April 21, 2023. The forecast is for a Severe G4 Event. According to the NOAA Scales, a G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm can cause widespread voltage control problems in power systems, surface charging and tracking problems for spacecraft operations, disrupted satellite navigation, and sporadic HF radio propagation.
As a result of this severe storm, there is a rare opportunity to see the Northern Lights as far south as Alabama and Ohio. StormTracker 13 Meteorologists predict that the Northern Lights will be extremely active tonight making them visible as far south as Ohio. Viewing is possible up until 2 AM on Monday, April 24th. It will be easier to spot the Northern Lights in an open space like a field or the top of a hill. Moving away from bright lights will help reduce light pollution and improve visibility. Although temperatures will be in the 40s and 30s, stargazers are advised to dress appropriately and stay aware of their surroundings.
Fox News has settled Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit for a whopping $787.5 million, which suggests an admission of guilt. If the case had gone to trial, the jury would have only ordered payment of damages and could not have ordered Fox News to apologize. Commentators have criticized the lack of apology from Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems may have held out for an apology in another lawsuit. Editorial cartoonists poked fun at Fox Chairman, Rupert Murdoch, for the settlement. The Supreme Court also dealt with the opposite rulings on the availability of the abortion drug, mifepristone, while other cartoons drew attention to Kevin McCarthy's plan to extend the debt limit or concern about artificial intelligence.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will go on an international trade mission to Japan, South Korea, Israel, and the United Kingdom this week. During his scheduled stop in Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he will meet with Governor DeSantis. Netanyahu said that he would meet with every representative, senator, governor, or member of Congress, regardless of political affiliation. He believes it is part of his job and important for Israel's bipartisan support in the United States. DeSantis is going on this trade mission to look at international trade opportunities, particularly for Florida businesses, and will give a keynote address at an event celebrating the 75th-anniversary of Israel's founding. However, the potential meeting between DeSantis and Netanyahu is particularly significant since DeSantis may declare his candidacy for President in 2024, and Netanyahu is seen as a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, who has been attacking DeSantis despite the latter not yet officially entering the presidential race.
Two Instacart delivery workers were shot at by a man in South Florida after they mistakenly drove to the wrong address to deliver the groceries. On April 15, Waldes Thomas Jr.,19, and Diamond Harley Darville, 18, had difficulty locating the correct address of the person who placed the order. They then drove onto the property of Antonio Caccavale, 43, in Southwest Ranches, a town in Davie, Florida. The man asked his son to tell them to leave, but when they attempted to reverse the car, they hit a boulder. Caccavale allegedly approached the vehicle and grabbed at the driver’s side window when Thomas began driving away. Caccavale then fired several shots towards the car’s tires. Police observed two bullet holes in the car's rear bumper, and the rear passenger tire was flat.
After the shooting, the couple left the area, while Caccavale informed the police of the incident. While initial reports suggest that no charges will be filed because both parties appeared to be justified in their actions based on the circumstances they perceived, Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor said the case would be reviewed by his prosecutors and decide whether charges should be filed. Meanwhile, Instacart stated that they were concerned about the safety of their community and are cooperating with law enforcement on any ongoing investigation.
The United States is once again on the brink of a debt ceiling crisis, with Republican leaders tying their support for raising the limit to significant spending cuts. President Biden, however, has refused to engage in any discussions, accusing the GOP of holding the country's economy "hostage" to push through unpopular policies. The debt ceiling serves as a cap on Treasury borrowing, enabling the government to fund its financial commitments. For decades, this limit was routinely raised through bipartisan efforts, with minimum fuss or drama. However, Republicans began using the threat of a default as leverage to extract cuts from Democrats starting in the Obama era. While this worked in securing minimal cuts in 2011, Democrats remained adamant, refusing to acquiesce when the GOP tried the tactic again in 2013.
Now, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has proposed a plan to raise the debt ceiling until early next year in exchange for cuts worth trillions of dollars over the next few years. Biden rejected the proposal, describing it as full of "wacko notions." Democrats have largely backed Biden's reluctance to give in to GOP threats, arguing that caving to their demands would only encourage them to demand more substantial cuts.
The Supreme Court's Friday ruling blocking restrictions on a widely used abortion pill spilled frustration among Republicans into the public. Republican Party members believe that the issue cost votes in the 2022 midterms, following the supreme court Dobbs v Jackson ruling that overturned Roe v Wade. Republican opposition to abortion remains strong despite Democrats’ stance of codifying federal protection for the practice.
A man in South Florida shot at two Instacart delivery workers who mistakenly drove onto his property, leaving their car with several bullet holes and a flat tire. According to the Davie Police Department report, 19-year-old Waldes Thomas Jr. and 18-year-old Diamond Harley Darville were attempting to deliver an Instacart order on the evening of April 15 but were having trouble locating the address. The pair mistakenly pulled their car onto the property of Antonio Caccavale, 43, in Southwest Ranches, a town about 20 miles northwest of Miami. Caccavale told investigators that he asked his son to tell the vehicle occupants to leave. He said he heard his son calling for help and ran to his aid, where Caccavale said the vehicle was driving "erratically" and hitting items on the property, such as boulders and fence posts. The car reversed, sideswiped him, and ran over his right foot, Caccavale said, which was when he drew his Smith & Wesson Shield handgun and fired several shots toward the tires. He told police he wanted to disable the vehicle. This recent incident of shooting at misplaced delivery personnel from Instacart and other delivery services has raised concerns about safety in the gig economy.
Nine teenagers were injured after a shooting took place at an after-prom party on County Road 263 in Jasper County, Texas, according to authorities. The incident occurred just after midnight on Sunday, and most of the victims were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital, with some being transferred to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting, and several persons of interest and witnesses are being interviewed, but no motive has been established yet. The police also revealed another shooting inside the city limits of Jasper took place, and they believe there is a possible connection between the two incidents. The Jasper School District is cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, and a larger law enforcement presence will be present this week to ensure student safety.
Police in Kenya have started exhuming bodies from over a dozen suspected graves believed to contain followers of the Good News International Church. The former religious group's members were encouraged to starve themselves to death with the belief they would ascend to heaven, said Kenyan police. Four of the followers died before making it to the hospital. The leader of the cult, Paul Mackenzie, who was arrested following a tip-off of shallow graves containing followers, is now in police custody. He has denied the allegations brought against him, calling them false. A former member of the church, Titus Katana, aided police by identifying the graves. With Katana’s help, at least twenty-one bodies (including those of three children) have so far been discovered in Kilifi county. Forensic experts will conduct medical tests on the exhumed bodies to confirm the cause of death. Investigations are ongoing, with police anticipating that more bodies will be found.
A recent Wall Street Journal poll challenges the widely held notion that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has an advantage over former President Donald Trump as a GOP presidential candidate. The poll, which surveyed Republicans, found that Trump leads DeSantis in most categories, including being a stronger leader and caring more about voters. Only 41% of Republican primary voters believed that DeSantis would have a better chance of beating President Biden in a head-to-head match-up, while 31% chose Trump. The poll also found that Biden's disapproval rating is the same as Trump's, and while 49% view Biden "very unfavorably," the 8% that view him "somewhat unfavorably" are Biden supporters. The survey also indicates that Biden leads Trump by a significant margin among voters who disapprove of both presidents. The poll results are noteworthy as DeSantis' small advantage over Biden in a general election does not appear to be helping him gain support in the Republican primary, where Trump is beating him by 13 points. Although 70% of Americans do not want Trump to run for president again, he continues to have considerable support from Republicans.
After getting dominated by the Hawks in Game 3, the Boston Celtics look to showcase the lessons learned from last year's NBA Finals run by bringing a higher level of urgency in Sunday's matchup. With the potential for the move-up of the conference semifinals, it is in Boston's best interest to finish off the Hawks quickly. They couldn't corral the desperate Hawks team in Game 3, who proved that they can make things interesting with their offensive firepower and relentless desire to collect offensive rebounds. The Celtics played from behind for much of the game and failed to get over the hump with Atlanta responding to every second-half charge. Drawing more from their superstars, particularly Jayson Tatum, and fully locking in their defense will be essential to their success in Game 4. However, the Celtics might also be without starting point guard Marcus Smart, as he is listed as questionable due to a lower back contusion. Dejounte Murray has been playing at a high level for the Hawks and making the biggest impact by creating opportunities for his teammates. Will the Celtics bring the necessary urgency against a determined Hawks team in Game 4?
Led by their dynamic duo, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics entered the NBA playoffs with the potential to be champions. After a season filled with dominant team performances and impressive individual performances, the Celtics are looking to make an even greater impact in the playoffs. Brown and Tatum have been the key contributors, with Tatum averaging more than 30 points per game in the regular season and Brown notching nearly 27 points and 7 rebounds per game.
Despite facing some challenges towards the end of the season, losing to teams they were expected to beat, the Celtics came into the playoffs with a strong victory over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1. With Tatum and Brown leading the way, the Celtics are on a mission to win it all this year. While Marcus Smart's contributions were perhaps not at the same level as his teammates, he has also played a part in their success. With such a strong core, it seems the Celtics have what it takes to go all the way this year.
FanDuel offers a same-game parlay for Hawks-Celtics Game 2 in which the Duke product needs to play exactly as he did on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 25+ points, 4+ assists, and draining as many trios as he did in Game 1, while Young simply needs to finish with 25+ points. However, through the first two games of the NBA Playoffs against the Hawks, Tatum has only shot two free throws total while he averaged a career-high 8.4 attempts per game. Tatum has let it be known to the referees he's not happy with the calls, but he added he's not the only one affected by the whistles. Both sides have experienced stretches of increased physicality where fouls were not called. In any case, the Celtics currently hold the 2-0 series lead over the Hawks heading into Game 3. Finally, it was revealed that Julian Edelman switched to being a Celtics fan in 2017 after joining the Patriots, but his true NBA fandom was put to a direct test during the NBA Finals last year, rooting for Boston against his former favorite team, the Golden State Warriors.
Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala is doubtful for Monday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks due to a lower-body injury. Fiala's absence is a significant blow to the Kings, considering his contribution to the team's offense this season. The forward has not played in several games due to his injury, and there is no set timeline for his return to the lineup. The Kings will need to rely on their depth to fill the void left by Fiala's absence. The team's recent struggles can be attributed in part to Fiala and Gabriel Vilardi's injuries, as both forwards have been instrumental in the Kings' success this season. While Vilardi remains out with an upper body injury for the Kings, Fiala's absence could hurt the team's pursuit of a playoff berth, given their recent struggles to score without him. The Kings will need to secure victories in their remaining regular-season games to have any hope of advancing to the postseason.
Despite posting 29 points and 12 rebounds in the Celtics' Game 1 win against the Hawks, Jaylen Brown was dealing with a cut that reopened on his right hand, according to Coley Harvey of ESPN. Brown originally suffered the cut last week and had to get stitches, but he was cleared to play on Tuesday for Game 2. Brown had padding over the cut during Game 1 but he left in the first quarter to return with a new bandage that was more comfortable. Boston will need Brown to be playing at his best as they continue in the playoffs, and it is uncertain whether his hand injury will affect him going forward. Despite the injury, Brown's performance in Game 1 was impressive, especially considering he had some trouble gripping the ball.
Alec Martinez scored a shorthanded goal, blocked two shots, and had a plus-3 rating in the Vegas Golden Knights' 3-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken. Martinez finished the NHL regular season with the most blocked shots in the league, recording 244 in 77 games, 46 more than his teammate Brayden McNabb. The 35-year-old defenseman had a quiet offensive season with only three goals, but his strong defensive presence and solid plus-minus rating of 30 make up for it. Additionally, Martinez is a two-time Stanley Cup champion and has 30 points in 103 post-season games. The Golden Knights finished the season second in the Pacific Division, with a record of 50-27-5, and will face off against the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs.
A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean far north of New Zealand on Monday, generating a small tsunami that reached a neighboring island. The quake was centered 74 kilometers southeast of Raoul Island and was initially estimated as a 7.3 magnitude but later revised down to 7.1. Although the quake was shallow, only 49 kilometers below the seabed, there is no threat of a larger tsunami. New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency asked people to avoid swimming and to stay off the beach, but quickly lifted the warning when it was determined there was no wider threat. Despite being within the Pacific Ring of Fire—an arc of fault lines around the Pacific Basin prone to large earthquakes—and a region of frequent large earthquakes, New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency believes this quake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand. The quake follows a series of devastating earthquakes along the country's East Coast last year.
Leon Draisaitl has been dominating the series against the Los Angeles Kings, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs series. In two games, Draisaitl has showcased his skills, scoring two goals and recording three assists, outshining even teammate and Oilers captain, Connor McDavid. Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft has praised Draisaitl, calling him the best player on the ice by far. While his teammate McDavid only has one point in the series, it is not yet time to push the panic button, considering the playoffs can be a small sample size. However, in the playoffs, everything is analyzed and McDavid's future performance will likely be heavily scrutinized. Despite McDavid not performing as expected, the Oilers have managed to tie the series with the Kings 1-1.
Adrian Kempe, forward for the LA Kings, reached the 40-goal milestone in the final regular season game against the Anaheim Ducks. Kempe finished the season with 41 goals and became the first King to score 40 or more goals since Luc Robitaille during the 1993-94 campaign. Kempe is the ninth different Kings skater to record a 40-goal season in team history. Kempe had been questioned externally about his ability to recreate his 2021-22 season, but answered those questions with a career-best of 41 goals in a season. Varying types of goals scored, including six empty-net goals, two in 3-on-3 overtime, as well as three while shorthanded highlight Kempe’s versatility. Kempe has been a valuable player for the Kings all season, with 35 goals in the previous season and earning an organization-high cap hit. While not a huge factor on offense in the postseason, Kempe can provide solid defense from his third-line role. Kempe’s successful season speaks volumes to the LA Kings’ overall growth and success.
The stunning landscape of Norway has made an appearance in "Succession" season four as the location choice for GoJo's annual retreat. The entirety of the Norway filming took place around More og Romsdal county, including the mountain Nesaksla where the Romsdals Gondola lift offers amazing views for tourists. The Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldal, surrounded by untamed pristine wilderness and innovative architecture, also makes an appearance in the series. Visitors can enjoy a slice of that billionaire deal-making life, as they can stay in the same cabins as the Roys without needing to be bankrolled by a media-mogul father to afford the PS500-a-night retreat.
The New York City-based series producer, Scott Ferguson, expressed that Norway is a glorious and natural setting that made it an ideal place for a family gathering in the series. Though Kieran Culkin, who plays Roman Roy, did not appreciate the stunning views because he was too focused on his character's dialogue. Nesaksla provided a dramatic backdrop for a confrontation between Lukas Matsson, played by Alexander Skarsgard, and new Waystar CEOs, Kendall and Roman Roy. Succession airs on HBO every Sunday at 9 PM Eastern Time.
