This week, the eyes of the nation are on the Northern District Court of Texas where Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk is presiding over a lawsuit brought by an anti-choice organization aimed to revoke the FDA's approval of mifepristone, a drug used in early-stage medication abortion. If the ruling goes in favor of the plaintiff, abortion access will be greatly hindered in Massachusetts and other states across the U.S. that currently allow the procedure.
The plaintiffs of the suit claim the FDA ignored the harmful, yet unproven, side effects of the drug that has been in use for decades. Experts argue, however, that the motivation for the case is to effectively eliminate any means of abortion, especially in response to the Supreme Court's ruling of overturning Roe v. Wade last year.
