Bud Light Faces Backlash After Transgender Influencer Sponsorship

Anheuser-Busch has faced a multitude of criticisms after sponsoring two Instagram posts by transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney on behalf of Bud Light. The promotion received both support from trans activists and backlash from conservative media, including Kid Rock, who called for a boycott of the company. The backlash escalated to physical danger when Anheuser-Busch facilities received bomb threats. Amidst the uproar, two executives who managed Bud Light's sponsorship of Mulvaney's post have been placed on leave. The moves satisfied critics who felt the company had not supported Bud Light's marketing manager, Alissa Heinerscheid, when she came under attack. Despite the company's history of appealing to LGBTQ+ drinkers by releasing beer in rainbow bottles for Pride Month and partnering with LGBTQ+ support organizations, the situation has resulted in a significant decline in sales, with Bud Light's U.S. retail-store sales dropping 17 per cent in the week ended April 15 compared with the year-earlier period.
