The House Ethics Committee has unanimously voted to open an investigation into Congressman George Santos of New York on the basis of several accusations including financial and sexual misconduct. The Republican representative is being accused of false disclosure of information on his House financial disclosures, violations of federal conflict of interest laws, and sexual misconduct with a congressional aide. Though Santos has yet to comment, he has responded to the inquiry on twitter with "fully cooperating" with the probe.
The House is split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, yet there is still cross-party support for this investigation. From the Republicans, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has stated that the House will take action based on the findings of the Ethics Committee. The findings were initiated by two Democratic representatives from New York who requested an inquiry back in January. Furthermore, other Republican colleagues from Santos' area, as well as local Republicans in New York, have urged him to step aside.
