On Tuesday, February 23rd, US Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael T. Ernst was pronounced dead after a tragic training accident in Marana, Arizona. The Navy had this to say in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ernst family. Mike was an exceptional teammate. He was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his talents and skills towards some of our nation's hardest challenges, while selflessly mentoring his teammates. Mike and his family will always be part of the NSW family, and he will never be forgotten."

Ernst, who was originally from Massachusetts, enlisted in the Navy in August of 2009 and was assigned to the East Coast Special Warfare Unit in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Throughout his fourteen year military career, he had been awarded a Silver Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Combat Action Ribbons and other numerous awards and accolades.
