Californians faced yet another round of extreme winter weather as another storm system is expected to bring heavy rain and snow through the weekend. As an added complication, temperatures from this storm are forecast to be higher, increasing the danger of flooding and flash flooding in certain areas.
Two fatalities had been reported by Friday, according to the California Office of Emergency Services (OES). Approximately 9,400 residents in 34 of the state's 58 counties have been issued evacuation orders. To accommodate the displaced residents, more than a dozen shelters were opened in nine counties.
David Lawrence from the National Weather service warned that the most significant impacts are expected to continue through Saturday, with hourly rainfall rates potentially reaching up to 1 inch per hour. Creeks and streams in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains were noted as the greatest risk for flooding from rain and snowmelt.
