Teacher Recovering After Student Allegedly Shoots Her Shares Challenges of Recovery

Abby Zwerner, a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, spoke out Monday in an NBC News interview with Savannah Guthrie, speaking at length for the first time since being shot by a 6-year-old student in January.

Zwerner has gone through four surgeries since the shooting on January 6. She told Guthrie, “Some days are not-so-good day, where I can't get up out of bed. Some days are better than others, where I'm able to get out of bed and make it to my appointments. But, for going' through what I've gone through, I try to stay positive. You know, try to have a positive outlook on what's happened and where my future's heading."

The incident prompted swift criticism from parents, and the school board voted to oust Superintendent George Parker III.
