Despite the clear violence of the day, which even spawned a congressional inquiry, Carlson portrayed those involved as peaceful patriots who felt wronged. During his prime-time show, Carlson aired footage showing everyday people taking selfies or simply meandering around the building, while falsely claiming absolute proof that Democrats had lied.

McCarthy's assistance of Carlson was a deliberate act to help rewrite history and paint the attack in a falsely peaceful light. It was an inappropriate and irresponsible decision, especially given that actual news organizations were denied access to the footage. The right-wing media figures, including Carlson, had long spread misinformation about the 2020 election which ultimately inspired the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
