Former South Carolina players A'ja Wilson and Allisha Gray returned to the site of their national championship win in 2017 to support their alma mater's quest for another title. The duo watched as the Gamecocks took on Iowa in the Final Four sporting the jerseys of their former coach Dawn Staley. The pair played pivotal roles in South Carolina's first championship, with Wilson contributing 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Gray added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Both WNBA stars continue to be involved in the program, visiting practices and reaching out to current players. Wilson, who won last season's WNBA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, helped the Las Vegas Aces win a championship. Meanwhile, Gray, who won the 2017 Rookie of the Year award, was traded this offseason to the Atlanta Dream, where she'll figure prominently.

South Carolina's Aliyah Boston, who was inspired to attend the university after watching the 2017 win, and guard Zia Cooke also recalled the victory as a turning point in their careers. The Gamecocks entered the 2023 tournament as the top seed and are looking for their third championship.
