Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Controversial Anti-Drag Law in Tennessee

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a controversial new Tennessee law that would prohibit public drag shows throughout the state, hours before it was set to take effect. Gov. Bill Lee had signed the legislation last month, sparking outrage from LGBTQ+ advocates across the US. The law defines drag performers as "adult cabaret performers," which would mean adult-oriented entertainment prohibitions would apply to drag performances. It’s part of a push by Republican lawmakers to restrict the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. A student protest and drag show at East Tennessee State University, scheduled on Wednesday before the law was set to take effect Thursday, drew a crowd of more than 800 people. A judge issued a temporary injunction following a lawsuit filed by an LGBTQ+ theater group, Friends of George's. The judge said state officials had failed to provide a convincing argument on why the law was necessary in Tennessee.
