A recent lap time recorded at the Nurburgring Nordschleife suggests that Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N might be able to give a Ferrari a run for its money. The sportauto magazine tested the Hyundai hot hatch at the iconic track and recorded a time of 7:45.59, quicker than several impressive sports cars, including the Ferrari 599 GTB. The Ioniq 5 N's lap time is even comparable to the times set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo and the Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe.
The sportauto test revealed that the Ioniq 5 N achieved this lap time using the Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires and the Sprint mode for the drivetrain. The driver also had to make corrections in unexpected parts of the lap, indicating that the hefty weight of the vehicle might have posed some challenges.
Hyundai is not only focusing on track performance with the Ioniq 5 N but also on customizability. The company's N Division plans to offer specialized tuning parts for their EV models, including the Ioniq 5 N, as well as custom software for sound output and vehicle calibration through over-the-air software updates.
While the Ioniq 5 N's lap time is certainly impressive, it remains to be seen how it will fare against other sports cars on different tracks. Nevertheless, Hyundai's foray into the high-performance EV market is an exciting development that challenges the traditional notion that EVs lack driving excitement.
