Why is local journalism more important than ever?

Local journalism has been recognized by this year's Pulitzer Prizes as critically important, despite the focus on the war in Ukraine and the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In fact, the spotlight was on local news, highlighting how local journalism can still make a difference in the lives of everyday people. The Los Angeles Times was awarded the Pulitzer in Breaking News for alerting citizens to secretly recorded and disturbing conversations among city officials in Los Angeles, which included racist comments and the impact it had on local politics. Similarly, the Miami Herald won in the Editorial Writing category for a series of editorials about the failed promises of local leaders. Without local journalism, residents of Brookside, Alabama may still be predated on by the police force to increase city revenue. The Pulitzer Prizes recognized the importance of local journalism and the positive impacts it has on citizens' everyday lives and communities.
