Off-duty police officer, Areanah Preston, was shot in a shootout with robbers on her way home from work, despite Chicago's ShotSpotter alert detecting the barrage of gunfire. While the initial alert was picked up quickly, another alert from the officer's Apple Watch regarding a car crash wasn't reported for 20 minutes. After a traffic cop arrived at the scene, it was confirmed that the officer had been shot. Police have not provided any explanation as to why it took so long to respond to the shooting. Although several people were detained for questioning, no charges have been filed. Two men and three women were charged only with armed robbery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and another man was identified as a suspect in the officer's death. Preston was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center after a responding officer found her wounded near Avalon Park, where she later died due to multiple gunshot wounds in her chest.
