International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Vladimir Putin for War Crimes in Ukraine

The International Criminal Court made headlines on March 17 when it issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children's Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, for allegedly forcing the deportation of Ukrainian children from Russian-occupied territory to Russia. According to Kyiv, some 16,000 children have been taken to Russia from Ukrainian territory since the February 2022 invasion, with only 307 being returned.

The Kremlin responded saying it does not cooperate with the ICC and that the warrant was "null and void". President Biden, on the other hand, sided with the ICC and stated the court was justified in issuing the warrant and that Putin has "clearly committed war crimes". He also noted, however, that the U.S. does not recognize the court's authority.
