Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white woman who accused black teenager Emmett Till of menacing and sexually assaulting her before he was later lynched in Mississippi in 1955, has died at the age of 88. According to a statement by Megan LeBoeuf of the Calcasieu Parish coroner's office in Louisiana, Donham's death occurred on Tuesday in Westlake. While details of her death were not disclosed, it has been noted that with her passing, the truth behind key events surrounding Till's murder is more likely to remain unknown. In 2017, Donham finally admitted that her prior testimony against Till was false and served as “the mouthpiece of a monstrous lie.” Till was lynched four days following the incident in the store. His mother’s decision to have an open-casket funeral, along with media coverage, brought national attention to racist violence and galvanized the civil rights movement.
