Two powerful earthquakes struck Turkiye last week. At 6.45 on February 20, an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude occurred in the Defne district of Hatay. Minutes later, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Samandag district of Hatay. In response to the consecutive quakes, Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has issued warnings to citizens to remain away from coastlines as a precaution against the possible risk of a sea level rise.
As a result of the earthquakes, several buildings suffered damages and had to be demolished. Additionally, in the Altinozu district of Hatay, a 300-meter-long, 50-meter-wide and 40-meter-deep valley was formed in an olive grove.
On Monday, teams of the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) conducted on-site investigations
