Montana governor signs law banning transition care for transgender minors

Montana has joined a growing number of states in the U.S. to restrict transition care for transgender minors. Governor Greg Gianforte signed the bill on Friday, which prohibits transitional hormone treatments and surgeries for transgender people under 18. The bill led to a standoff with Representative Zooey Zephyr, one of Montana's only transgender lawmakers, who called the ban “tantamount to torture.” In what many regard as an “unconscionable” move, the Republican-controlled house blocked Ms. Zephyr from the house floor for the rest of the legislative session. The ban has been opposed by Gianforte’s son, who identifies as nonbinary. The legislation in Montana comes amid a growing trend among roughly a dozen states in the U.S. that have adopted similar laws restricting transition care. The move has drawn public backlash, with all sides awaiting a legal outcome on the controversial issue.
