Will Artificial Intelligence Create or Destroy Jobs?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making waves in the job market, with potential to both create and destroy employment opportunities. As AI technology, particularly generative AI like ChatGPT, continues to advance, it has the capability to transform various professions and disrupt traditional job roles. This raises concerns about the impact it will have on global employment.

According to Denis Machuel, CEO of Adecco, the world's largest temporary staffing agency, AI's influence on jobs is going to be massive. While AI has the potential to create new positions, it also poses a risk of displacing certain jobs. Roles that involve repetitive information management tasks are particularly vulnerable to automation.

However, historical evidence suggests a balance between job destruction and creation when new technologies are introduced. AI may require more human input to manage increased complexity, leading to the creation of roles that require strategic thinking, problem-solving, and deep understanding.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that AI will impact 60% of jobs in advanced economies and a significant portion in emerging markets. Low-income countries are expected to experience a lower impact, with only 26% of jobs likely to be affected. Older individuals may face the greatest impact from AI.

To navigate these changes, Adecco has partnered with Microsoft to develop a career platform that provides guidance on skill development and job opportunities. The platform incorporates AI tools to automate tasks and allow human workers to focus on more complex aspects of their jobs.

While the future of jobs in the age of AI remains uncertain, it is clear that AI will bring both benefits and challenges to the workforce. The key lies in adapting to these changes and leveraging the potential of AI to enhance productivity and create new employment opportunities.
