Is a Deadly and Drug-resistant Fungus Spreading in Healthcare Facilities?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a deadly fungus that is spreading quickly in healthcare facilities. The fungus, called Candida auris, is drug-resistant and can pose a significant threat to medically fragile patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy or on ventilators. CDC data shows that fungal infections from the yeast strain tripled in the US between 2019 and 2021. Cases where individuals carry the fungus but are not infected have also risen fourfold in the same period. Although scientists believe that the fungus doesn't represent a threat to healthy individuals, those hospitalized with bloodstream infections are estimated to face a mortality rate of between 30 and 70%. Healthcare facilities are likely to use more antifungals to tackle the issue now that the CDC has issued a warning.
