After six weeks of trial testimony and closing arguments, the fate of prominent South Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh, is now with a jury of seven men and five women. On Thursday afternoon, the jury began deliberating whether Murdaugh is guilty of murdering his wife and son.
Murdaugh's lawyer, Jim Griffin, made the case that the police had become so focused on the idea that Alex Murdaugh was the killer, that they "fabricated" evidence and a dubious theory about his possible motive. He urged jurors not to believe the claims of innocence Murdaugh had made from the witness stand.
The prosecution argued that Murdaugh killed his son with two shotgun blasts and then turned a rifle on his wife at their family's rural hunting estate on June 7, 2021. They maintain that the murder was an effort to keep his long-term embezzlement of millions of dollars from being exposed.
