Barcelona scraped past Girona at the Montilivi Stadium 1-0 on Saturday thanks to Pedri's decisive second-half goal, but Ronald Araujo and Sergio Busquets remain at risk of being suspended for Barca's next game against Real Betis later this month. Both players have picked up four La Liga bookings so far this season meaning another yellow card could rule them out against Betis, a much stronger opposition.
Araujo, who has been a revelation since returning from injury, is renowned for his aggression and timely fouls, making it difficult to stay level-headed against Getafe in the build-up to the Betis clash. Meanwhile, Busquets, a key figure for Barcelona for the last decade, often uses tactical fouls to win possession or disrupt the opposition’s flow.
To compound their potential absence, Barca surrendered multiple opportunities against Girona in a poor attacking performance, compounded by Ousmane Dembele’s first-half injury. Still, substitute Pedri was able to seize his 100th appearance for the club, converting Jordi Alba’s cross after Paulo Gazzaniga failed to hold on.
Elsewhere in Europe, Union Berlin won the battle of the capital to close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, while real Elche remain rooted to the bottom of Spain’s top-flight. It will be interesting to see how Barcelona approach their next game in light of the potential suspensions and whether or not they can pull out another result.
