On Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers made their way to the Crypto.com Arena in Sacramento for the latest installment of their rivalry with the Kings. After a wild game full of ups and downs for the Lakers, the Kings emerged victorious with a 116-111 final score.
The Lakers had a strong first quarter to take a 14-point lead over the Kings, but the Kings did not back down and managed to cut the lead to one point with just seconds left in the game. Despite a timely 3-point play by Lakers star LeBron James that tied it up, the Kings pushed past them by exploiting the Lakers' defensive gaps late in the game. Harrison Barnes effectively split a double team laid out by Patrick Beverley and Russell Westbrook, resulting in a foul and two foul shots.
The Lakers then blew possession of the ball, failing to get a good shot before Juan Toscano-Anderson fouled De'Aaron Fox. Fox split his shots from the free throw line and the door was opened for a game-winning three from Kendrick Nunn, clinching the game for the Kings.
Los Angeles has had a mixed record in these close-game situations, losing back-to-back games to Dallas and Philadelphia recently that furthered their old concerns. Tuesday's disappointing loss makes it clear that the Lakers still have work to do before they can lock down close victories.
