Wyoming Governor Signing Controversial Abortion Bills into Law

On Friday March 17, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill that would make the use or prescribing of medication abortion pills illegal. In addition, he allowed a more sweeping abortion ban to become law without his signature. The two laws will take effect this weekend.

The first law will specifically outlaws prescription contraceptives and so-called "morning-after" pills, with exemptions only for treatments of natural miscarriage and imminent peril to the life or health of the woman. Violation of this ban is punishable by up to 6 months in jail with a maximum fine of $9,000.

The second law, referred to as the Life is a Human Right Act, will ban abortion except where necessary to protect the health and life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest.
