Rivian, the electric vehicle startup, has filed for permits to host a "worldwide product launch event" in Laguna Beach, California, hinting at the unveiling of their highly anticipated R2 SUV. The event is scheduled to take place on March 7, 2024, at the Rivian Theater, formerly known as the Laguna Beach Movie Theater. While the official documents do not explicitly mention the R2 SUV, the accompanying plans are titled "Rivian R2 Launch," leaving little doubt as to what will be revealed.
The R2 platform is expected to underpin a new range of smaller and more affordable electric vehicles. With a projected price range of $40,000 to $60,000, the R2 SUV aims to compete with Tesla's Model Y and Model 3. Rivian's Chief Financial Officer, Claire McDonough, stated last year that the R2 would be unveiled in early 2024.
Rivian has been steadily gaining attention with its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV. The launch of the R2 platform is seen as a crucial step for the company to expand its market share and compete with other electric vehicle manufacturers.
If Rivian successfully unveils the R2 SUV in March, it could mark a significant milestone for the company and potentially position them as a serious competitor in the electric vehicle market.
