Sgt. Daniel Perry Set for Sentencing in the Death of Garrett Foster

Sgt. Daniel Perry, who was convicted of murder in the death of Garrett Foster during a 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday. Perry could face life in prison for the crime. The judge is expected to consider Perry's social media posts and messages, in which he railed against protesters, during the sentencing hearing. Perry's attorneys also stated that many people have reached out to speak on Perry's behalf. This case has grabbed the attention of the nation after Texas Governor Greg Abbott indicated he would exonerate Perry upon a request from the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole. Perry had claimed self-defense in firing at Foster during the incident, but prosecutors claimed that Perry instigated the encounter by driving his car into the protest. Both Perry and Foster were legally carrying firearms at the time. On Friday, a Travis County jury convicted Perry of murder.
