Martin Odegaard is showing maturity beyond his years as the Arsenal captain. The 24 year-old was surprisingly given the armband by Mikel Arteta and has had plenty of support this season. Alongside him are Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Jesus, forming a leadership trio that is helping Arsenal soar to the top of the Premier League table. This is undoubtedly similar to Manchester City's strategy who, similarly to Arsenal, rely on a leadership group to support the captain.
Thus far this has been an inspired move from Arteta, where the duo of Xhaka and Jesus have stepped in to replace former captains Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Not only is Xhaka the most vocal player in Arsenal's dressing room, but Jesus has had an impact off the pitch by bringing energy, organizing team socials, and instilling successful habits.
The restructuring of the Arsenal squad was made evident in their 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur this month. Odegaard had the final word in the dressing room shortly before kick-off, and the Gunners won without Jesus who is currently sidelined with a knee injury. It is clear that the leadership trio is having a profound impact on the team. If they continue to support the captain, Arsenal have a good chance of becoming champions this season.
