Kolo Toure Failed To Find Success In Short Stint As Wigan Manager

Former Liverpool defender Kolo Toure's first venture into football management ended in failure after being sacked from his job as Wigan manager after just 59 days. The 41-year-old had only recently made the move to management, having jobs as first-team coach for Ivory Coast, Celtic, and Leicester.

Upon being offered the manager's role for Wigan in November of last year, Toure signed a three-and-a-half-year deal. Unfortunately, the results were not what was expected. After losing five games and drawing two in his first seven matches, Wigan fired Toure after two months, leaving his record at six defeats and three draws in nine games. Wigan were left at the bottom of the Championship table.

Toure did bring in former Liverpool teammate Steven Caulker during his reign as manager, but Caulker now faces an uncertain future with the club searching for a successor in the dugout. Steven finished both of Toure's final league games with Wigan.

In his departing statement, Toure said after the Luton defeat: "We conceded another cheap goal early on and, when that is the case, it is very difficult for you. We have to be more ruthless in both boxes".

Malachy Brannigan, Wigan's Chief Executive commented saying; “Firstly, I'd like to thank Kolo, along with Kevin and Ash, for their efforts during their time at the football club. Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as we would have liked and as tough a decision as this was, the board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season”.

Kolo Toure failed to find success in his first managerial job, but the veteran defender is undoubtedly looking back on the experience with a newfound drive to succeed.
