Van Buren County Man Faces Unimaginable Loss After Severe Vandalism

Ryan Long has been dreaming of opening his brewery in Gobles for seven years, but soon after construction commenced the business was faced with unthinkable damage. Last week, a group of three 13-year-olds was caught on camera entering the property for three days straight and doing $100,000 of vandalism.

Long arrived to discover every window broken, shards of glass throughout the building and outside, kitchen equipment destroyed, and hydraulic lines filled with sand. The vandals had even used rocks, golf clubs and fence posts to smash their way through. To make matters worse, two previous break-ins left the building uninsurable so Long is left with a $200,000 repair bill that he must cover with his own funding.

Despite initial hopes of opening this summer, Long is now left to doubt the fate of his seven-year dream. A GoFundMe has been set up by a friend to help cover some of the costs, as well as more fundraisers by local businesses. The three juvenile suspects have confessed to the vandalism, but so far no arrests or charges have been issued.

Long described the crime as “unfathomable” and “senseless," adding that "It's hard to believe anybody would do something like that and think it's OK.”
