President Joe Biden has thrown a wrench in the divisive battle between congressional Democrats and Republicans, announcing his plan to sign a resolution that would overturn the District of Columbia's crime bill. The resolution, which passed in the Senate 81-14 and in the House with 31 Democrats joining all Republicans, has exposed divisions within the party over how to combat rising crime rates.
The District of Columbia City Council's rewrite of the criminal code has been under review for years and passed unanimously. However, Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, vetoed the bill, raising concerns from Republicans and the president that the bill could be seen as too lenient.
"What we've got is a D.C. city council that seems to be completely bent on achieving some sort of woke messaging on criminal justice reform, as opposed to worrying about the safety and security of people who come to visit and those who reside in this city
