Did the CNN town hall with Donald Trump serve America?

On Wednesday night, former president Donald Trump held a prime-time town hall on CNN, deploying a barrage of falsehoods. Despite the public backlash, CNN Chairman Chris Licht issued a robust defense of the broadcast, stating that "America was served very well by what we did". Trump repeated several lies that birthed the insurrection and repeatedly asserted that the 2020 election was rigged. He expressed no remorse for Mike Pence narrowly escaping the Capitol riot. He beatified Ashli Babbitt, the Capitol rioter who was shot dead, and committed to pardoning most of the January 6 rioters. The former president ridiculed the "whack job" E Jean Carroll, who accused him of rape and won her lawsuit against him for sexual abuse and defamation. Immigration and energy remain Trump's talking points, compelling independents and working-class voters. CNN moderator Kaitlan Collins was no match for Trump's tactics. Despite the criticisms, Licht stated that it is the network's job to have "that messy conversation". If the 2016 campaign showed that many Americans could not agree on common facts, the Babel-like nature of Wednesday's town hall suggested that voters now occupy wholly different universes.
