Wyoming on Friday became the first US state to outlaw abortion pills, with Governor Mark Gordon signing a bill that would punish prescription and illicit sales of the pills with up to six months in prison or a $9,000 fine. In a separate but related move, Gordon allowed a wider bill that bans all abortion except in limited circumstances to become law without his signature. Women “upon whom a chemical abortion is performed or attempted” will not be prosecuted, and the law exempts treatment of a “natural miscarriage according to currently accepted medical guidelines.”
The legislative moves in Wyoming come as a Texas judge considers a lawsuit that could effectively place a nationwide ban on the common abortion pill, mifepristone.
