G20 Meeting Ends in Discord Over Russia-Ukraine War

On the 24th of February, leaders at the G20 finance ministers' meeting in India were unsuccessful in reaching an agreement on the war being waged by Russia against Ukraine. Disagreements within the group can be largely attributed to Diametrical positions taken by the United States and Russia, as well as reluctance from India, who hold the G20 presidency this year.

US Trade Secretary Janet Yellen urged G20 countries to "redouble their efforts to support Ukraine and restrict Russia's capacity to wage war" and said that Russia's "weaponization" of food and energy has had a global impact. Russia was represented by deputies, as its finance minister did not attend the meeting.

The US and its allies have been pushing for a communique that casts blame for the invasion of Ukraine on Russia, and the situation was made increasingly complex due to India’s lack of public condemnation of Russia and the country
