House Ethics Committee Launches Investigation into George Santos

The House Ethics Committee announced Thursday that it is initiating an inquiry into Representative George Santos, a Republican from New York charged with lying about his background, misspending campaign funds, and sexual misconduct allegations. The Committee will answer questions including whether fiscal and conflict of interest regulations have been violated, as well as determining the validity of any sexual allegations. The investigation is led by Ohio Representative David Joyce, with two Democrats and two Republicans on the investigative subcommittee.

Though there have been calls from Republican constituents and lawmakers alike to step down, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has not pushed Santos to do so, stating they would "take action" if the Ethics Committee found cause. Furthermore, two Democrats from New York had requested the inquiry earlier this year and their efforts paid off due to the ten-member committee, evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, who voted unanimously for the move.
