Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated from a public event in Wakayama after what appeared to be a smoke bomb was thrown in his direction. Officials acted quickly, and Kishida was unharmed and later stated that he would continue with his planned schedule for the rest of the day. Video footage showed police officers piling on the person believed to have thrown the bomb. The individual was arrested at the scene. The public has been left shocked by the incident, which comes just nine months after Kishida's predecessor, Shinzo Abe, was shot to death while giving a campaign speech in the western city of Nara.
