For millions of TikTok users in the US, the popular video-sharing platform may soon become inaccessible as the Biden administration is ramping up pressure to ban the app in the country. Politically, the issue has drawn bipartisan support in Washington, D.C. with a bill currently going through Congress, known as the RESTRICT Act, that would grant the secretary of commerce the power to regulate or ban foreign-produced technology like TikTok – owned by Bytedance, a Chinese company.

The potential ban comes as the Biden administration is investigating reports of user data that could fall into the hands of the Chinese government and could be weaponized for China's political aims.
