Will Justin Jones be Reinstated to Tennessee’s Legislature?

The Nashville Metropolitan Council is set to meet today to consider the vacancy left in Tennessee’s state legislature after Justin Jones was expelled last week. Jones had joined fellow lawmakers Justin J. Pearson and Gloria Johnson in demanding gun control measures after a fatal shooting at a Nashville school. The trio broke House rules; Pearson and Jones were expelled, while Johnson survived the vote. However, 23 members of the 40-seat Metropolitan Council have already stated they would vote to send Jones back to the Legislature. If selected, Jones would still have to run in a special election. Protests are already being organized by groups, such as March for Our Lives, who plan to march from the courthouse to the capital before the meeting. The expulsion of the Black lawmakers, especially in the absence of similar action taken against white lawmakers who broke rules, drew attention to racial dynamics in Tennessee's Legislature. Meanwhile, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, which is responsible for choosing Pearson’s replacement, will convene on Wednesday to consider reappointing Pearson.
