Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter has decided to forego additional medical intervention and will instead begin receiving hospice care at his home, according to a statement from The Carter Center on Saturday.
Carter, 98 years-old, has had a series of short hospital stays over the year. In the statement, The Carter Center said: "Former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team."
The former president rose to fame in 1977, when he became the 39th President of the United States. He served a single term and was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in advancing global peace and human rights.
