Two school districts, Wake County Schools and Pitt County Schools, have recently announced settlements in lawsuits against e-cigarette manufacturers over teen vaping. Wake County Schools has settled for $1.9 million with Altria, a maker and marketer of tobacco products, which also owns a stake in JUUL Labs. This is the second settlement for Wake schools in a federal vaping case that includes JUUL Labs, with the first settlement being $6.2 million. The funds from the settlements will be used by Wake County Schools to educate students about the dangers of nicotine use and to reduce nicotine use.
Meanwhile, Pitt County Schools has received the first payment of about $230,000 from its JUUL litigation settlement. The district joined a multi-district litigation against JUUL Labs in August 2022 and plans to use part of the funds for a vape detection system. The system, which has already received positive feedback in a pilot program at Farmville High School, aims to provide a safer environment and raise awareness of the health risks of nicotine.
These settlements come as school districts across the country have filed lawsuits against e-cigarette manufacturers, alleging an impact on students and school operations. The settlements highlight efforts to address the issue of teen vaping and promote the health and safety of students.
