As Tulare Lake refills with floodwater due to heavy snowmelt, concerns are rising for neighbors of the Tulare Lake Compost Facility near Kettleman City. The Los Angeles County Sanitation District owned facility is surrounded by about 14,000 acres of land for farming that will protect it from any water, though the facility itself was built five feet higher from the surrounding land. There is also a levee between the Tulare Lake bottom and the property surrounding the facility. The facility has already allowed the county to pump some water onto their farmland and expects more in the coming weeks due to the amount of snowmelt. Nevertheless, Bryan Langpap of the Sanitation District says any water they receive will remain in their farming operation, while they are receiving reduced compost materials. The piles outside the facility are already safe and the microbes remaining therein are nutrient-rich soil. Officials worry that the floodwaters may reach the compost facility, yet owners guarantee that they’re ready to face it.
