Arkansas will be in the direct path of the Great American Eclipse, a rare total solar eclipse, on April 8th, 2024. During the eclipse, the moon will move between the Earth and the sun blocking out its light, with 100% of the sun being blocked. The eclipse will enter southwest Arkansas at around 1:45 PM and will be over Little Rock, Conway, and Russellville around 1:50 PM before exiting northeast Arkansas around 2:00 PM. The length of the total eclipse depends on the location in the path of totality, ranging from over 4 minutes along the blue line to about 2 minutes along the edges of the path. On the other hand, during the annular eclipse on October 14th, 2023, only 70% to 80% of the sun’s light will be blocked. Arkansas reportedly also saw a total solar eclipse on August 21st, 2017. Special glasses are required to safely view the eclipses. The Great American Eclipse is expected to draw thousands and even millions of people to witness the historic event.
