On February 7th, 2023, the world was left in shock when two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 struck Turkey and Syria respectively. Followed by aftershocks, the impact of the quakes reached as far away as Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. In the end, over 3,500 people lost their lives and the breathtakingly sad video caught on the news of a building collapsed by the aftershock made the horror real.
Those fortunate enough to survive were left sleeping out in the cold, traumatized and in shock. Paramedics, firefighters, and aid workers faced a daunting task, trying to help everyone in need, not having enough resources handle the situation. Whole families have been killed and in addition to the physical damage, the emotional trauma is just as devastating.
Why was the quake so deadly? According to The Washington Post, the large size of the quake, it
