Mount Washington, Arctic Freeze, and Deadly Power Outages: Record Breaking Cold and Tragic Loss of Life Across U.S.

The record-breaking cold wave has hit all corners of the United States, from Maine’s Mount Washington recording a wind chill of -108.4, to the tragic death of a 6-month-old in Southwick, Massachusetts crushed by a falling tree.

Residents of New York City were forced to use the city's emergency shelter system as the temperature underwent its “Cold Blue” designation, a condition when resources need to be made available to the public for maximum safety.

Texas and Arkansas have been among the hardest hit, with Arkansas experiencing up to 35,000 outages with 150,000 in the dark in Texas. The conditions were so harsh that the wind chill on Cadillac Mountain in Maine’s Acadia National Park was reported at -62F.
